Survival Mode 101

💌 Brand:Mochas Diary

Lesson 1

“Trauma gave me jokes, healing gave me punchlines.”

I ain’t gon’ lie… a lot of the stuff I laugh at now? It damn near broke me when it happened. But when you’ve been through enough, you either cry forever or start clowning your own pain just to survive.

Lesson one: use what tried to kill you. Flip it. Make it lighter. Make it yours.

The jokes were survival. The punchlines? That’s me finally breathing.

Because if I can laugh at it, then it don’t own me no more.

... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? That deep, gut-wrenching 'survival mode' where every day feels like you're just trying to keep your head above water. As a millennial, I swear sometimes it feels like we're constantly juggling adulthood, societal pressures, and the lingering effects of... well, everything. There are moments when you truly feel like you're navigating it all alone, wondering how to survive without anyone else's direct help or even understanding. It’s in those lonely moments that I’ve learned to lean on one of the most unexpected coping mechanisms: dark humor. I used to think it was just a defense mechanism, a way to avoid dealing with the real pain. And maybe it started that way. But over time, I realized it's so much more. It's about reclaiming power. When trauma or hardship hits, it tries to own you, to define you. But when you can look at the absurdity of it, or even make a wry joke about the sheer ridiculousness of your situation, you're not letting it win. You're flipping the script. It's like that old saying, 'sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.' And honestly, for me, it's often the only way to genuinely start the healing process. It’s not about being insensitive or downplaying what you’re going through. Far from it. It's about acknowledging the depth of your pain, but then finding a tiny sliver of light, a spark of defiance, in the darkest corners. For instance, when I was going through a particularly tough time, I started making jokes about mundane things going wrong on top of the big issues. 'Oh, perfect, my car just got a flat tire – just what I needed to complete this masterpiece of a day!' It sounds small, but that little release, that moment of shared (even if just with myself) absurdity, gave me a mental break. It allowed me to breathe. This journey of 'healing with dark humor' has taught me so much about self-reliance. When you're constantly asking 'how to survive without me' – meaning, how do I find the inner strength when I feel completely isolated or unsupported – humor becomes your anchor. It connects you to your own resilience. It helps you build that internal fortress. You realize that you can navigate these impossible feelings, not by ignoring them, but by finding a unique, sometimes twisted, way to process them. It's truly a form of mental judo, using the weight of your struggles against themselves. So, if you're feeling stuck in survival mode, wondering how to keep going when it feels like everything is stacked against you, try to find that flicker of dark humor. Journal about the most ridiculous things that happen. Share a morbidly funny thought with a trusted friend who 'gets it.' Look for memes that perfectly capture your existential dread. It’s not about burying your feelings; it’s about giving them a different outlet. It’s about not letting the pain consume you, but rather, finding your unique way to metabolize it and, eventually, come out stronger, laughing all the way to your own recovery. Because once you can genuinely laugh at what tried to break you, you'll know it doesn't own you anymore. That's true survival.
