Day 1 in Toronto, Canada for Caribana Fest 🇨🇦

Went to Canada for 5 days for Caribana Festival weekend and had a time! 💃🏾

👍Pros: The day/night life is insane! Lots of options and things to get into.

🤔Cons: The Food🤢…the food was so bad I had to eat subway and chipotle so that I wouldn’t die😂

Travel Tip: Avoid restaurants!!!! If you ever go to Toronto, eat street food from food trucks. Thats where the flavor is lol. You can usually find them parked outside almost every club/venue.

... Read moreHey fellow travelers! I wanted to add a few more thoughts on making your Caribana experience in Toronto absolutely unforgettable, especially since so many of you are curious about the dates and what the festival is all about. First things first, Caribana dates! If you're searching for when to plan your trip, know that the Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana) typically kicks off around late July and runs into early August. It's North America's largest Caribbean festival, celebrating Caribbean culture with vibrant parades, music, and food. The exact dates shift slightly each year, so my best advice is to check the official Toronto Caribbean Carnival website or trusted tourism sites for the most up-to-date schedule as soon as you start planning. Trust me, flights (like on Air Canada, which I flew!) and accommodations book up incredibly fast for this period, so getting those dates down early is key! Once you have your dates, let's talk about the experience itself. The main event, the Grand Parade, is an absolute spectacle – think dazzling costumes, pulsating soca and calypso music, and an incredible energy that flows through the city. But Caribana isn't just one parade; it's a series of events! Beyond the main procession, there are countless 'fetes' (parties), boat cruises, and J'ouvert celebrations. I personally loved the vibe at the vibrant pool parties – they're a must-do if you want to cool off and keep dancing. And yes, I even got to see Fat Joe perform at one of the concerts! The city truly transforms into a massive celebration. Now, about getting around. Toronto's public transportation system (TTC) is pretty good, and it's definitely your friend during the festival, especially with road closures for the parade. Consider buying a day pass or a Presto card. Rideshares are also an option, but be prepared for surge pricing during peak festival hours. And don't underestimate walking – you'll discover so much more of the city's energy on foot. Let's circle back to the food, because my initial trip really highlighted this! While I mentioned avoiding restaurants, let me elaborate on why and what to look for. Toronto has an incredible array of Caribbean street food, especially during Caribana. Keep an eye out for food trucks selling authentic jerk chicken, savory roti (filled with curry goat or chicken), flaky beef patties, and delicious doubles (a Trini staple with fried flatbread and chickpea curry). These aren't just snacks; they're full-flavored meals that truly capture the spirit of the islands. You'll find them scattered near venues, parks, and especially along the parade route. And a quick tip: always carry cash for these smaller vendors! Hydration is also super important when you're out dancing and exploring in the summer heat – grab water bottles frequently. Finally, a few general tips for making the most of "Caribana Fest": wear comfortable shoes – you'll be doing a lot of walking and dancing! Bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Keep your valuables secure, perhaps in a cross-body bag. Most importantly, immerse yourself in the culture, talk to people, and let the infectious energy of the festival carry you away. It's an experience unlike any other!
