books with LGBTQ+ main characters 🏳️🌈
Happy Pride Month!!!
Here are six book recommendations featuring LGBTQ+ characters, none of which are romance novels. I see everyone recommend LGBTQ+ romance books and i wanted to suggest some I don’t see super often (except one iconic book, The Song of Achilles).
I have personally read all of these novels except The Great Believers, which is on my tbr!! Three of these books are on my six-star reads list: The Spear Cuts Through Water, Six of Crows, and The Song of Achilles! I wholeheartedly believe that The Spear Cuts Through Water deserves soooooo much more love as it is one of my favorite books of all time, so if you only choose one from this list i would suggest that one!!

It's so exciting to dive into stories that truly resonate, especially when celebrating Pride Month! While LGBTQ+ romance novels are wonderful, sometimes you crave a different kind of adventure or a deeper exploration of identity and experience. My list aims to bring you some of the best LGBTQ+ books that offer rich plots, compelling characters, and themes that extend far beyond a love story, perfect for broadening your reading horizons. Let’s talk about some of these incredible reads in more detail. For instance, 'The Great Believers' by Rebecca Makkai, which is on my TBR, is a fantastic example of a compelling gay novel that blends historical fiction with literary depth. It masterfully intertwines two timelines, exploring the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Chicago and a mother's search for her estranged daughter in modern-day Paris. Readers who appreciate character-driven narratives and complex emotional journeys, perhaps even those who enjoyed the intricate storytelling of 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,' might find a similar draw to the unfolding secrets and personal histories within 'The Great Believers.' It offers a poignant look at friendship, loss, and resilience within the queer community. If you're searching for LGBTQ+ fantasy books, you absolutely must pick up 'The Spear Cuts Through Water' by Simon Jimenez. This quest fantasy is truly unique, with a multi-POV structure that pulls you into a richly imagined world. It’s not just a fantasy; it’s an epic journey with deep emotional stakes and incredible world-building. Similarly, 'Six of Crows' and 'Crooked Kingdom' by Leigh Bardugo offer a thrilling heist fantasy experience with diverse characters, including prominent queer representation, making them excellent choices for those seeking LGBT YA books with high-stakes adventure and intricate plots. For those who love a good mystery or psychological thriller, 'The Writing Retreat' by Julia Bartz, with its sapphic themes, delivers suspense and intrigue. It’s a twisty tale that keeps you guessing, showing how queer identities can be woven into thrilling narratives without being the sole focus. And then there’s 'If We Were Villains,' a dark academia literary fiction mystery that captivates with its dramatic plot and complex relationships among a group of Shakespearean students. These types of queer books prove that LGBTQ+ characters can lead any story, no matter the genre, offering diverse perspectives and experiences. Even iconic books like 'The Song of Achilles,' while often celebrated for its central romance, offers so much more. It's a masterful retelling of Greek mythology, a story of war, destiny, and the human condition, all seen through the lens of a deeply personal and heartbreaking connection. It transcends simple categorization, cementing its place as one of the best gay novels, admired for its literary merit and emotional resonance. These recommendations are all about celebrating stories that showcase the vast spectrum of queer experiences and narratives, ensuring there’s a captivating read for every taste beyond just romance.
