i never really got into collages when i was an artist because i, for some pretentious reason at the time, didn’t think they counted as “real art” since i didn’t draw all the pictures with my hands 🥴 i would collage together drawings i had made on receipt paper at work in my sketchbook, but i didn’t count that.
now though, i’m a burnt-out graduate with a little too much free time and i want to get back into both art and journaling. i figured this would be a good way to start, but didn’t think it belonged in my sketchbook, so into my new journal it went.
i collected every magazine and pamphlet and promotional paper i could grab when i was on vacation in the outer banks, and didn’t really know what to do with the papers. that’s how we end up here: a journal that needs to be filled and pamphlets that need to be used. a solution was born and i decided to get into a new form of art.
this is kinda random and there isn’t really a theme outside of my trip to the outer banks, but i did hide some things from that trip and specific memories i made there in the collage!! we stayed in corolla, hence the “corolla is calling” title. most of the pictures are of things i actually did there as well. there’s a picture of the wild horse museum, which i visited, as well as the whalehead, which i also visited. i also saw dolphins multiple times there so the dolphins made an appearance!!!
overall i’m satisfied with my first-ever collage and i think this is something i want to continue doing in my journal because it was therapeutic and relaxing, especially to do after a long day at work. :) i definitely want to cut out more pictures from the magazines and stuff and collect new things to add to my collection after this!!!
i also really like the idea of just having a bunch of random cutout pictures to put in journal entries so it’s more like a scrapbook or pinterest board!!! i’ve been rewatching gravity falls recently and mabel has also inspired me to start scrapbooking 😌
... Read moreIt's so cool that my little collage journey resonated with you! When I first started, I truly thought you needed to be a 'real artist' to create something meaningful, but making this journal collage totally changed my mind. If you're looking to dive into creating your own personalized visual collage, especially one that expresses your unique interests and personality, here are some easy tips I've picked up.
First off, don't feel like you need fancy supplies. My collage, with elements like 'Pogue Life' and 'Corolla is Calling' from my Outer Banks trip, was mostly made from things I already had: old magazines, tourist pamphlets like the 'Gallen Guide' or those about 'Wild Horses of the Currituck Outer Banks,' and even some random papers. Think about what truly interests you – maybe it's travel, books, nature, or even just a mood. That's your theme! Gather anything that catches your eye: pictures, textures, patterns, and especially words.
Speaking of words, incorporating 'magazine word art' or 'collage word art' is one of my favorite ways to add personality. Instead of just pictures, scour magazines for interesting fonts, catchy phrases, or single powerful words. You can cut out individual letters to spell something out, or find whole sentences that speak to you. For instance, I found 'Corolla is Calling' and knew it had to be in my collage because it perfectly captured my memories. This makes your collage more than just images; it tells a story, almost like a visual poem. It’s a fantastic way to create that 'word art aesthetic' I love!
When it comes to putting it all together, think of it as a playful puzzle. Don't glue anything down right away! Lay out your pieces – big images like a lighthouse or a yellow van, smaller details like a dolphin or wild horses, and your chosen word art – on your journal page or canvas. Play with different arrangements until something just feels right. This is where you can really get creative with a 'mixed media collage art' approach. Don't be afraid to add little doodles, splashes of paint, or even fabric scraps if you have them. It's all about layering and creating depth.
What I found most surprising is how therapeutic this process is. It's an 'easy collage about yourself' because there are no rules. It’s a moment to disconnect, reflect, and literally piece together your memories and aspirations. Whether you’re like me, a "burnt out former artist" finding joy in a new medium, or just someone looking for a relaxing creative outlet, collage making is incredibly rewarding. It allows you to design a personalized visual collage that truly integrates your interests, abilities, and personality without any pressure. So grab some old papers, a pair of scissors, and glue, and let your creativity flow!
This turned out great! I just bought a few accordion folders to organize my paper scraps and magazine cutouts and I highly recommend ✨
