... Read moreAs an English Springer Spaniel owner, I can tell you that these dogs are true bundles of joy, and Sadie is no exception! One of the things that makes them so special is their incredible love for water. If you've ever wondered why English Springer Spaniels are such natural swimmers, it's deeply ingrained in their history as hunting dogs. They were bred to retrieve game from water, so splashing around is practically in their DNA! Watching Sadie dive into the pool or confidently paddle in the ocean is truly a sight to behold. Her sleek, water-resistant coat and powerful build are perfectly suited for swimming. If you're thinking of getting your English Springer Spaniel into swimming, here are a few tips from my experience: Start Slow: Not every dog takes to water immediately. Introduce them gradually, perhaps by wading in a shallow area first. Sadie initially preferred just cooling off by the pool steps before fully committing to a swim. Safety First: Always supervise your dog around water. Even strong swimmers can get tired. For lake or ocean swimming, a doggy life vest can provide extra safety and peace of mind, especially if they're new to it or swimming for long periods. Make it Fun: Throw a floating toy to encourage them to retrieve. Sadie absolutely loves chasing her floating ball, making swim time a fantastic game! Rinse After: Especially after a dip in the ocean or a chlorinated pool, always rinse your Springer Spaniel off to protect their skin and coat from salt or chemicals. This helps keep their beautiful brown and white fur healthy. Beyond her swimming prowess, Sadie embodies so many classic Springer Spaniel traits. They are incredibly energetic and intelligent dogs, needing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. That's probably why Sadie and my son, Malcolm, are such great companions – they both have endless energy! I've seen her gently lick Malcolm's hand, showing that sweet, nurturing side of the breed. And yes, they are notorious food lovers! Sadie definitely thinks all food is her food, and she's not shy about trying to investigate. I've caught her on her hind legs, paws on the kitchen counter, trying to sniff out what's cooking, or even with a scrunchie on her head after a playful moment, eyeing her partially eaten dog food bowl. Their curiosity also extends to other animals; Sadie is absolutely fascinated by the cat next door and loves to watch the backyard rooster through the glass door. Living with an English Springer Spaniel like Sadie means constant laughter, endless cuddles, and always an adventure. They truly become an integral part of the family, bringing so much joy and lively energy into the home.
