Generally, female turkeys—hens—start laying eggs once they reach maturity, while males do not. Spotting early signs can be confusing due to their fluffy feathers and similar size when young. That's why our turkey, initially thought to be a tom (male turkey), catching us off guard by laying an egg was such an eye-opener. This experience reminded me how hands-on farm life teaches patience and observation. Each day brings new surprises, like recognizing the difference between the turkey's characteristic red wattle and snood as it matures, or the subtle changes in behavior. Caring for turkeys also involves understanding their needs—ample space to roam, a balanced diet rich in proteins, and a safe nesting area to encourage egg laying. Seeing an egg from a turkey felt rewarding because it meant she was healthy and stress-free. Naming her 'Turkalina' felt like welcoming a new personality into our flock and a symbol of the joys and unpredictability that come with animal husbandry.
