... Read moreAfter my recent getaway to Karoo Resort at Smith Mountain Lake, I just had to share more about this incredible spot! If you're looking for a unique glamping experience in Virginia, this place is truly buitengewoon – that's Afrikaans for extraordinary, and it perfectly captures the vibe. From the moment we arrived, the South African style Village inspo was evident everywhere, from the architecture to the intricate decor in our KUDU cabin. It felt like we'd been transported to a different continent, but with all the comforts of home. The resort does an amazing job of blending adventure with relaxation. We spent our days out on Smith Mountain Lake, kayaking along the serene shores and trying our hand at fishing – even caught a small one! There’s something so refreshing about being surrounded by nature, and the lake views are absolutely stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. For a more active afternoon, the volleyball net was always a hit, and when it was time to unwind, the cozy hammocks scattered throughout the property were just perfect for a quiet read or an afternoon nap. As evening approached, gathering around our private fire pit, sharing stories and roasting marshmallows under the starlit sky, became our favorite family tradition. The sound of crickets and the crackling fire made for truly magical evenings. What I really appreciated was the 'glam' in glamping. Our cabin, resembling some of the names on the resort map like ZAMBEZI and BOSCHENDAL, was surprisingly spacious and beautifully decorated with authentic touches. It wasn't just a basic tent; it had comfortable, real beds, effective climate control for any weather, and yes, that fast Wi-Fi and Netflix I mentioned, which was a lifesaver for winding down after a day full of activities. Each unit felt private and offered enough space for everyone to relax comfortably, making it a perfect balance for a family trip without feeling completely disconnected. For anyone planning a visit to Karoo Resort Smith Mountain Lake, I'd suggest packing layers, as evenings by the lake can get cool, even in summer. Don't forget your swimsuits and water shoes for all the lake activities. While the resort offers communal grills and picnic areas, we found it helpful to bring some easy-to-prepare meals and snacks for quick breakfasts and lunches, though there are local dining options a short drive away if you prefer to eat out. Booking in advance, especially for popular seasons like late spring or early fall, is definitely a good idea to secure your preferred cabin. The quiet beauty of the lake and the vibrant autumn colors during these times are just unparalleled. Karoo Resort isn't just a place to stay; it's an experience. It’s perfect for families, couples, or even solo adventurers looking to escape the everyday and immerse themselves in a uniquely themed natural setting. I left feeling refreshed, recharged, and already planning my next visit. Trust me, if you're searching for an unforgettable glamping adventure at Karoo Resort Smith Mountain Lake, you're in for an absolute treat! It’s truly a little piece of South Africa right here in Virginia.
