Unsolicited Advice For New YouTubers

I made a LOT of mistakes as someone who was new to the world of content creation on YouTube. Despite my mistakes, I was able to become monetized on YouTube as a “small” Youtuber. (Please note that Adsense on Youtube is NOT the only way to make money from the platform. Don’t put all your eggs into that basket).

Check out some of my tips on how to get started on YouTube that you might want to consider.

... Read moreOkay, so the original post just scratched the surface on something super important: YouTube monetization isn't just about AdSense! When I first started, I definitely fell into that trap, thinking that once I hit those subscriber and watch time numbers, money would just roll in. But trust me, there are so many other avenues to explore, and for new creators, these can often bring in income much faster and more consistently than AdSense alone. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that diversifying your income streams is key. You might be wondering, "Should I focus on subscriptions or merchandise sales initially?" My personal take is that merchandise can sometimes be an easier entry point if you have a clear brand or message. Think about T-shirts, mugs, or even digital products like presets or templates related to your niche. It's a direct way for your audience to support you and get something tangible in return. Subscriptions, like YouTube Memberships or external platforms like Patreon, usually come later when you’ve built a dedicated community willing to pay for exclusive content or access. Both are fantastic, but merch can often be less commitment for your audience initially. Another huge area is affiliate marketing. This is where you recommend products or services you genuinely love and use, and when someone buys through your unique link, you get a small commission. It costs your viewer nothing extra, and it's a win-win. For instance, if you're like me and started with just an inexpensive light and mic (remember the "use what you already have" advice?), you could share links to those exact items. Or perhaps a software you use for editing. It's subtle, incredibly effective, and doesn't require a massive audience to start. Then there are brand deals and sponsorships. This is where brands pay you to feature their product or service. This often comes with a bit more experience and a more established niche, but it's never too early to start thinking about it. A professional media kit (even a simple one) can make a big difference when you reach out to brands. It's not just about subscriber count; engagement and audience fit are often more important. And for those wondering about specific content types, like "can funny edited gameplay be monetized without commentary on YouTube?" Absolutely! The key is originality and engagement. If your edits are unique, hilarious, and captivating, even without commentary, they can attract an audience. This audience can then be monetized through super chats during live streams, channel memberships for exclusive behind-the-scenes content or early access, or even brand deals with gaming peripheral companies. It’s all about providing value and entertainment in your unique way. Just remember to always keep YouTube's community guidelines in mind, especially regarding copyright and fair use, to ensure your channel remains in good standing for all these monetization opportunities. Don't be afraid to experiment and "hit record & post your videos" – you never know what will resonate!
