Starting out as a new LTC nurse can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to med passes. One helpful strategy I've incorporated is thorough preparation before beginning the pass. Stocking your cart with med cups, spoons, water, and thickeners all at once really minimizes extra trips and keeps the workflow smooth. Prioritization is another game-changer. Instead of simply going room by room, focus first on time-sensitive medications like insulin or epilepsy meds, and then attend to high-acuity patients needing pain management. I’ve found pre-scheduling my rounds around patients who have early appointments or dialysis helps keep my shift on track. Distractions during med administration are risky, so setting boundaries politely but firmly, like asking colleagues to hold interruptions until scanning is complete, protects both patient safety and your license. Also, batching medications and hydration needs together helps prevent wasted steps. Lastly, managing patients who enjoy chatting during med passes can slow you down. Having a prepared polite script, such as asking if they need anything else before moving on, helps keep the pace steady while maintaining a caring approach. Focusing on accuracy over rushing has decreased my mistakes significantly. Taking 5-10 minutes to mentally reset before starting, and adopting a structured med pass flow, gave me confidence and improved my efficiency. These small adjustments can make med passes less stressful and more manageable, allowing you more time for other nursing duties during your shift.
