What's their hidden struggle? For instance, I remember sketching out one character, an anime-style figure with spiky hair, and I decided to give them a sign that says 'UP THE GOOF' and 'S.T.F.U.' on their hand – it adds instant personality, right? These small, unexpected details can really make a character memorable. Don't be afraid to add a bit of humor or rebellion! When it comes to designing appealing costumes, I often start with a core concept or a feeling. Is the character mysterious? Then perhaps a traditional outfit with long, flowing hair in a high ponytail could work, evoking an ethereal feel, like one of my early sketches. Think about how the costume reflects their personality, powers, or even their origins. For my character 'Peep foot,' I envisioned a casual, relatable vibe with a green and white striped spherical head, wearing a white hoodie and blue jeans – simple yet distinctive! I also love playing with contrasts. A character named 'Josh Nod,' for example, might wear a casual 'VIBE' hoodie but have a serious job or backstory. Or 'SHILLS F.L.' with spiky hair and abs showing in a cropped hoodie – it tells you a lot about their confidence and style without saying a word. These visual cues are crucial in character design. What kind of vibe do you want your character to give off? Another tip for original concepts: think about their silhouette. Even in a monochrome drawing, a strong silhouette makes a character recognizable. Experiment with different hair types, body shapes, and clothing layers. Don't be afraid to mix and match elements from different genres or cultures. Sometimes a simple change, like making a character's head spherical, can create a truly unique look that stands out. Finally, don't forget the power of small accessories or unique markings. Does your character have a specific tattoo? A unique weapon? A catchphrase written on their clothing?
