Don’t Be Their Backup For A Relationship!

I've been there, constantly checking my phone, hoping for a text or call, only to find out I was just an option when their primary plans fell through or they were bored. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling that chips away at your self-esteem, making you question your worth. But here's the truth: you deserve more than to be a temporary distraction for someone who isn't concerned about you when it truly matters. Why do we often fall into this trap? Sometimes, it's the fear of being alone, the hope that if we just stick around long enough, they'll eventually see our value. Other times, it's a subtle manipulation where they give just enough attention to keep us hooked, without ever committing. They know you're expecting them, but they decide to prioritize other things – and you’re not one of them. This pattern is a clear sign that you are only important when they're available, or when someone else isn't more important to them. They make you feel better temporarily when they're bored or need somebody there for them, but that's all you are – just that backup. The first step to breaking this cycle is radical self-honesty. Look at their actions, not just their words. Do they consistently communicate their schedule, or do you always feel like an afterthought? Are you the one always initiating plans, or are they genuinely invested in spending quality time with you? If you find yourself constantly waiting by your phone, making excuses for their inconsistent behavior, or feeling like you're competing for their attention, it’s time for a change. Next, it’s crucial to set firm boundaries. This might mean significantly reducing your availability to them. Stop dropping everything when they suddenly reach out. Don’t instantly reply to late-night texts if they haven't engaged with you all day. You don't have to be rude, but you can be unavailable. Let your actions subtly communicate that your time and attention are valuable, and not something to be taken for granted. This isn't about playing games; it's about protecting your energy and self-respect. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, focus on rebuilding your self-worth. Understand that your value as a person isn't determined by whether someone chooses to prioritize you. Engage in activities that make you feel good, spend time with people who genuinely appreciate you, and remember all the amazing qualities you bring to a relationship. It takes courage to walk away from someone you care about, especially when you’ve invested time and emotion. But choosing yourself, choosing respect, and choosing a relationship where you are truly valued – not as a backup, but as a first and only choice – is the most empowering decision you can make. You deserve someone who makes you a priority, not an option.
