Since getting a new piercing like the one in my upper cartilage can sometimes come with questions, I wanted to share some thoughts and tips beyond just identifying it. First off, whether it's a helix, flat, or conch, the most important thing is aftercare! I learned this the hard way with a previous piercing that got a bit irritated. To avoid any issues, make sure you’re cleaning your piercing twice a day with a saline solution – no harsh chemicals or alcohol! Gently spray, let it sit for a moment, and pat dry with a clean paper towel. And please, resist the urge to touch it! Hands carry so many germs, and touching can easily lead to irritation or even infection. Speaking of infections, it's super important to know the signs. If your piercing gets really red, swollen, hot to the touch, or starts discharging thick, colored pus (not just clear lymph fluid), it might be infected. Don't panic! My first instinct was to take it out, but that can sometimes trap the infection inside. Instead, keep cleaning it diligently and definitely see a professional piercer or a doctor. They can give you the best advice, whether it's an antibiotic or just some extra TLC. Remember, early intervention is key! Now, onto the fun part: earrings! Once your piercing is healed (which can take anywhere from 6-12 months for cartilage piercings, so be patient!), the world of jewelry opens up. For my upper cartilage piercing, I'm currently rocking a simple silver hoop, but I'm dreaming of so many other styles. Gold hoop piercings are so chic, and delicate studs with tiny gems or unique shapes can really elevate your ear stack. When choosing earrings for your helix or other cartilage piercings, think about comfort and material. Surgical steel, titanium, and 14k or 18k gold are usually the best bets for sensitive skin. Look for flat-back labret studs for initial jewelry, as they're super comfortable for sleeping and less likely to snag. Once healed, you can experiment with seamless rings, clickers, or even small barbells. The key is to find something that reflects your style but also fits well and won't cause irritation. Sometimes, just changing the size of your hoop, from a snug fit to a slightly larger one, can completely transform the look! I'd love to hear your experiences and see your favorite helix or cartilage earring setups! What are your go-to shops for cute jewelry? Any specific brands or styles you swear by? Let's share all the piercing inspo!
