Job search advice 🫶

2024/5/30 Edited to

... Read moreLanding your dream job often comes down to how effectively you can answer one crucial question: "Why should we hire you?" It’s not just about listing your qualifications; it's your golden opportunity to sell yourself and stand out from the crowd. I've learned that truly acing this question goes beyond memorizing a few lines. It's about tailoring your response to resonate deeply with the interviewer and the company. First, I always start with deep research. Before walking into any interview, I dive into the company's mission, values, recent projects, and of course, the job description itself. This helps me understand their specific needs and what problems they're trying to solve. For instance, if the company values innovation (as mentioned in the OCR examples for "Why do you want to work here?"), I'll think about times I've brought new ideas or improved processes. If customer service is key, I'll recall experiences where I turned an unsatisfied customer into a happy one. Next, I craft my unique selling proposition (USP). What truly makes me the best candidate? Is it my blend of people skills and being a fast learner? Perhaps my ability to empathize with and relate to people, or my organizational skills that help keep projects on track. I make sure to connect these personal strengths directly to how they will benefit their team and their goals. Instead of just saying "I'm a great team player," I might say, "My teamwork skills mean I can seamlessly integrate with your existing group, contributing to projects and ensuring we meet deadlines, much like I did when I shared the workload on a tight project." (referencing the 'worked effectively under pressure' example). Finally, I use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to back up my claims. While the OCR provides excellent STAR examples for questions like dealing with angry customers or making a mistake, I adapt this framework to support my "why me" answer. If I claim to be a solution-oriented person, I'll briefly share a problem I faced, the action I took, and the positive result. This isn't just telling them I have relevant skills and experience; it's showing them with concrete evidence. Remember, the goal is to leave them thinking, "Yes, this person has exactly what we need, and they can prove it!" By preparing thoughtfully and speaking authentically, I've found this question becomes an exciting chance to shine.
