📖Book Review📖

Book name: The Uncanny: The Origins of Fear

Author: Junji Ito

Genre: Memoir/ Horror Manga Analysis

Intro: The journey of Junji Ito and how he first got into manga and the art behind it. Especially in the horror genre.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My review: I’ve been a fan of Junji Ito since his Netflix series released in 2023, his work is one like no other.

I enjoyed getting to delve into the mind of his works and how he became the most notorious horror manga artist to this day. His works are unlike any that I have seen or read.

He does a deep dive into his childhood, he even includes how some of his work was based on experiences from when he was younger. He dives into each piece of work and what it takes to write each storyline.

Reading this honestly opened my eyes to what it is like to be a full time artist, it’s not even remotely close to what I expected. Each manga piece takes at least one month to a few months. Creating the storyline, the plot, the climax, and the art itself is magnificent. I definitely recommend the read for all manga fans and horror fans as well!

... Read moreReading 'The Uncanny: The Origins of Fear' by Junji Ito was truly an eye-opening experience, even for a long-time horror fan like me. Beyond the initial review, I wanted to share more about what makes Ito's approach to horror so uniquely unsettling, especially for those familiar with his work through the Netflix series or his other iconic manga. It's not just about gruesome imagery; it's about a profound psychological discomfort that lingers long after you've closed the book. What struck me most was how he dissects the very concept of 'the uncanny' – that feeling of eeriness when something familiar becomes strange and terrifying. Ito is a master at this, taking everyday objects or situations and twisting them into nightmares. Think about how he can use a seemingly innocent spiral or a simple human face, and through his incredible manga art, transform it into something monstrous and deeply disturbing. The way he meticulously crafts a woman's expression to slowly reveal a monstrous face within her features, or the subtle distortions in a familiar landscape, are perfect examples of his genius. This isn't just cheap scares; it's a methodical dismantling of our sense of safety and reality. The book sheds so much light on how his own childhood fears and observations became the fertile ground for his grotesque yet captivating stories. It makes you realize that true horror often stems from universal anxieties amplified by personal experience. I always wondered where his bizarre ideas came from, and this book gives you that privileged peek behind the curtain. It's not just about drawing a scary picture; it's about understanding the primal fears that resonate within us all. For anyone looking to delve deeper into the origins of fear in narrative, this memoir/analysis is invaluable. It goes beyond the 'what' of his stories and explores the 'how' and 'why.' You get to appreciate the sheer dedication involved in bringing these visions to life. Knowing that each piece of manga can take months to perfect – from conceptualizing the chilling storyline to perfecting every single panel – makes you look at his work with renewed respect. It's a testament to his artistic integrity and his unwavering commitment to his craft. This book isn't just for manga enthusiasts or horror aficionados; it's for anyone curious about the creative process and the psychological underpinnings of fear. It truly enhanced my appreciation for Junji Ito, making me not just a fan of his stories, but an admirer of his profound understanding of the human psyche and his unparalleled ability to translate those insights into truly unforgettable, terrifying art.
