Celine was not excited about her store’s mascot reveal—and much less about being told she’d have to dress up for half her shifts, come June. In a Rabbit Costume. Ustore only had a few locations, but they were moving too quickly, promoting their new mascot. It’s not like they were a well known name. The area was surrounded with woods and fields; the small towns it bordered were small and home to few. But, as August drew near, Celine knew she couldn’t up and go. Mike was stubborn and would cut her hours. Even worse, he could threaten to fire her, right before her third college semester would start. So she suck it up and, against the blazing July heart, wore the sweaty mascot costume, yet again, which only grew hotter and smellier against the dark pavement. A few more weeks, she told herself, then she’d go back to school in the city. Maybe even get a job there, while she was at it. One that paid well and was completely indoors.
In the meantime, this would do. “Rabbit Girl,” Mike would call her to grind her gears. He was well meaning, at least, since she was his favorite employee. Just.. sort of annoying.
As Celine grew lost in thought, hours turned into minutes, and, with a blink, the sun had begun to set. She realized Mike hadn’t cut her yet.. she should have been out over an hour ago. She heard shuffling by the back exit of the store and turned to find Eric the graveyard shift.
“Mike said you’re good to go. Just to leave the suit in the office.”
“About time,” Celine replied, muffled by the costume, “I was supposed to get cut at 4..”
Eric sighed. “You know how he is.. at least the sun is setting and you’re not working tomorrow. it’s supposed to be hotter, then.”
Celine hissed at the thought. “Oh right.. sorry about that.”
“You’re good,” Eric replied. He wasn’t too bothered by it. Nonchalantly, he turned around and went back inside, leaving Celine to finish up and go back on her own.
This isn’t even a Buppies.. she shook her head. Let me out..
She heard footsteps again, this time ahead of her, across the road.
It was an older man. He must have been in his late sixties. He stood still, like a statue, eyes fixated on Celine. Her heartbeat spiked;bile rose in her throat. It was freaking her out. It was getting dark, and a man had suddenly appeared from nowhere. She knew it was time for her to head out. She looked around her and then ahead, only, this time, the man was no longer in sight.
Celine sighed, and her body relaxed. He was probably on a walk and couldnt believe what he saw. Wearing a rabbit fursuit in a small midwestern town is like beginning to be pointed and laughed at. Celine would give him that.
