Following up on my last post, it seems many of you loved getting a peek into the real world of jewelry making! So, here's part two of 'What People Think I Do vs. What I Actually Do' as a wire wrapped jewelry artist. When I tell people I make wire wrapped jewelry, their eyes often light up with visions of glamorous studios, effortlessly twisting wires into stunning gems, and perhaps lounging with a cup of tea while magic happens. Oh, if only! The reality is a beautiful, messy, and incredibly rewarding journey, but definitely far from the Instagram-perfect fantasy. Expectation vs. Reality: The Tools of the Trade People often imagine I just have a couple of pliers and some pretty beads, right? While those are certainly part of it, the reality involves a whole arsenal of specialized tools. From various types of pliers (round-nose, flat-nose, chain-nose, bent-nose – you name it!) to wire cutters, hammers, anvils, mandrels, and even miniature files for smoothing edges. Then there's the wire itself: copper, sterling silver, gold-filled, in different gauges and tempers. And of course, the gemstones! Selecting the perfect stone for each wire wrapped jewelry piece is an art in itself. The 'Effortless' Creation Process Friends sometimes ask, "Oh, can't you just whip up a necklace in an hour?" If only! Each piece of wire wrapped jewelry, especially the more intricate designs, can take hours, even days, of focused work. It starts with conceptualizing, sketching, then carefully shaping the wire, ensuring every curve is just right to securely hold the stone and create a beautiful, balanced design. There’s a lot of trial and error, sometimes un-wrapping and re-wrapping a section multiple times until it's perfect. My fingers often get sore, and yes, I’ve had my fair share of accidental pokes and scrapes from stubborn wire ends! The Unseen Challenges Beyond the visible crafting, there’s so much more that goes into being a handmade jewelry maker. There’s the constant learning of new techniques, researching ethical sourcing for gemstones and metals, photography to showcase my wire wrapped creations, managing inventory, packaging orders, and handling all the social media aspects. It’s a full-time passion that extends far beyond the workbench. Sometimes, a wire breaks, a stone cracks during setting, or a design just doesn't come together as planned, leading to moments of frustration. But those moments are always overshadowed by the immense satisfaction of finally holding a finished, shimmering piece of wire wrapped jewelry that started as a simple idea and a length of wire. So, while the idea of a glamorous, effortless creative life is fun, the true magic lies in the dedication, the calloused fingers, the endless hours of practice, and the sheer joy of transforming raw materials into something beautiful and meaningful. It’s a journey I wouldn't trade for anything, and I’m so happy to share these glimpses into my actual world of wire wrapping with you all!
