Wait, so MAC Cosmetics is not popular anymore?

I saw this article titled “Where did it all go wrong for MAC Cosmetics (and other once-popular prestige brands)?” MAC isn’t popular anymore? Am I missing something? I thought MAC was a very popular brand that became a staple for everyone, and now it isn’t anymore? Am I missing something?

... Read moreWow, reading that article really got me thinking! It's wild to consider that a brand as iconic as MAC Cosmetics might not be as popular as it once was. For so many of us, MAC was the brand when we first got into makeup. I remember saving up for my first MAC lipstick – it felt like a rite of passage! But seeing those headlines about their market share declining and questions like 'is MAC Cosmetics going out of business?' makes me wonder what's truly happening in the beauty world. From my perspective, a lot has changed. When MAC was at its peak, the beauty landscape was very different. There weren't as many indie brands popping up every other day, and social media wasn't the giant influencer it is now. Back then, MAC's pro artist heritage, extensive shade ranges, and trendy collections really set them apart. Their Viva Glam campaigns were also revolutionary, blending glitz with a cause. Now, it feels like there's a new brand launching every week, all promising the next big thing. Consumers have so many options, and many of these newer brands are super accessible, often with lower price points or a strong focus on 'clean beauty' or specific skincare benefits that perhaps MAC didn't prioritize as much initially. The rise of direct-to-consumer models also means brands can connect with their audience without relying solely on department store counters, which used to be MAC's domain. Another factor could be the shift in makeup trends. While MAC was famous for its bold pigments and full-coverage looks, there's been a strong move towards more natural, 'no-makeup makeup' or dewy finishes. Of course, MAC has adapted and released products for these trends, but perhaps their core identity is still strongly linked to those more artistic, high-glam looks. It's also worth considering the impact of celebrity and influencer brands. We see celebrities launching their own lines, which instantly grab massive attention and market share. These brands often come with built-in audiences and massive marketing budgets, making it tough for established brands to compete for the spotlight. So, is MAC Cosmetics going out of business? I highly doubt it. They're part of Estée Lauder Companies, a massive beauty conglomerate, and they still have a huge global presence. However, their market share might have indeed shifted. They're operating in a much more crowded and dynamic space. It’s no longer about being the only cool brand; it’s about constantly innovating and staying relevant to a diverse and ever-changing consumer base. For me, I still have a soft spot for MAC. Their Studio Fix Fluid foundation is a classic for a reason, and I still adore their Retro Matte Lipsticks. But I definitely find myself trying out more diverse brands now. It's not that MAC isn't good; it's just that there are so many other fantastic options out there. What do you all think? Have you noticed a change in MAC's presence or your own buying habits?
