I’m a big ramen fan
We love to take breaks from heavy “touristy” things all the time and do our comfort things from home to just relax and get a sense of how they differ from country to country.
I’m sure a lot of people do this, but we always make sure to check out different grocery stores everywhere to see what cool stuff they have.
Also what’s become more or less a tradition for us is to try ramen and escape rooms in most destinations. I’m a big ramen fan so it’s always fun to see what the “top rated” ramen in random places is like. Often it’s not very good but it’s still fun to get perspective.
More recently we’ve gotten into doing escape rooms in different countries (if they have English) cause we’ve done most of the ones around us and many of the top rated are in other cities.
What kinds of things do you all do that aren’t considered “normal” for travel?
When traveling, many people enjoy exploring local cultures through traditional experiences, but stepping off the beaten path can lead to unexpected delights. One of our cherished traditions is to visit various grocery stores in each city we explore. This gives us a glimpse into local life, allowing us to sample unique snacks and ingredients that we can't find back home. Our focus on ramen adds another layer of fun to our adventures. Instead of just visiting Michelin-starred restaurants, we search for hidden gems that locals love. Ramen, with its diverse variations and regional specialties, becomes a delicious lens through which we experience a city. Often, these culinary adventures are hit or miss, but they enrich our experiences and provide stories to share. In addition to ramen, we’ve also taken up the challenge of completing escape rooms abroad, leveraging our love for puzzles and teamwork. Each escape room visited instills a sense of accomplishment, offering a deeper insight into the culture and creativity of our host countries. Travel is about making memories, and it’s fascinating to observe how every country has its unique quirks and experiences that go beyond typical tourist attractions. I encourage others to uncover their uncoventional travel traditions. Whether it’s trying out local delicacies, participating in a cooking class, or exploring art markets, these activities provide authentic interactions that elevate our journeys.
