NYU majors for XR product design

Hey everyone!

Been eyeing NYU and wondering which programs dive into XR tech, interactive design, and visual art, like UI/UX, prototyping, virtual exhibitions, and blending creativity with AR/VR.

From what I’ve seen:

1. Tisch School of the Arts has ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program), which is super hands-on, lots of projects with emerging tech. Alum projects include VR installations and interactive exhibits, which sounds perfect for XR design.

2. Interactive Media Arts (IMA) under Tisch also focuses on digital media and user experience, this might have courses on prototyping for immersive environments.

3. Steinhardt’s Integrated Design & Media mentions “interactive systems” and “experiential design”, it could be a fit for the UI/UX and virtual exhibition side.

But am I missing a program in Engineering or SPS that’s more tech-focused? I want a mix of creative design and technical skills (coding, prototyping tools like Unity/Figma). Not sure if ITP is too art-heavy or if IMA leans more digital media than XR-specific.

Any current NYU students/alums here? Which program had the best courses for building XR products or immersive experiences? Did you take classes that combined program with virtual reality/augmented reality tech?

... Read moreNew York University offers a range of programs that blend technology and creativity, particularly suited for those interested in XR (Extended Reality) product design. The Tisch School of the Arts is renowned for its Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), which emphasizes hands-on learning with emerging technologies. This program has produced many innovative alumni projects, including virtual reality installations and interactive exhibits, making it ideal for aspiring XR designers. Another program worth noting is the Interactive Media Arts (IMA), also under Tisch, which concentrates on digital media and user experience. Courses often include prototyping for immersive environments, key for developing XR applications. Steinhardt’s Integrated Design & Media program addresses interactive systems and experiential design, perfect for those looking to enhance their UI/UX capabilities alongside virtual exhibitions. For students who seek a more technical foundation in XR product design, it's wise to explore engineering programs or the School of Professional Studies (SPS) that may focus more on the technical aspects and coding that complement creative skills. Key tools like Unity and Figma are essential in this field, particularly in prototyping interactive environments. Current students and alumni are encouraged to share their insights on which courses were most beneficial for creating XR products and experiences, particularly those that integrate virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. Engaging in discussions can provide invaluable information about the best paths to take within the university as aspiring XR professionals.

I eat more now than I did on the left — I had a bad relationship with food and I was lazy when it came to cooking. I used to be one of those girls that would count calories, eat “fat free”, wait until 4/5pm to have a bite of food… I would be so hungry I’d binge, understandably. I would feel so
