During the third trimester, many pregnant individuals expect to experience the nesting instinct—a sudden burst of energy and a strong desire to prepare the home for the baby’s arrival. However, it's completely normal for some, like myself, not to feel this urge at all. At 35 weeks pregnant, I noticed that "nesting" just wasn't happening for me, and that’s okay. There are various reasons why nesting might not occur, including fatigue, stress, or simply personal variation. The body is busy working towards labor and delivery, and sometimes conserving energy is more important than running around cleaning or organizing. Listening to your body is key during these weeks, as overexertion can cause unnecessary discomfort or complications. In place of the nesting instinct, focusing on gentle preparation can be just as effective. This includes packing a hospital bag thoughtfully, reviewing birth plans, and mentally preparing for labor. Staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals, and doing light prenatal exercises can also improve your comfort and readiness. Labor preparation isn’t only physical—educating yourself about the birth process, pain management options, and postpartum care provides confidence. Connecting with healthcare providers to discuss any concerns or questions helps alleviate anxiety as well. If you find yourself without the nesting urge, consider using this time to relax and rest as much as possible. The third trimester can be demanding, and preserving your energy supports you and your baby’s health. Remember, every pregnancy journey is unique, and not experiencing nesting doesn’t mean you are any less prepared for your little one’s arrival.
