Hey artists and character enthusiasts! I'm so thrilled you're checking out my post about Jazmyn, who has quickly become one of my absolute favorite original characters. You might be wondering, what exactly is an OC, and why do artists like me spend so much time bringing them to life? An Original Character, or OC, is essentially a character created by an artist or writer, distinct from existing intellectual properties. For me, creating OCs is a powerful way to express my creativity, explore new narratives, and even represent diverse perspectives that I might not see enough of in mainstream media. It’s a deeply personal journey, allowing me to build entire worlds and personalities from scratch. When I started designing Jazmyn, I really wanted to create a strong, beautiful black original character. It's so important to me to showcase diverse representation in my art, and she truly embodies that. I spent a lot of time thinking about her visual identity, drawing inspiration from various sources to bring her unique charm to life. You can see in her full-body drawing, she's a dark-skinned character, which I highlighted with careful shading and vibrant colors. Her signature look includes a striking dark purple one-piece outfit, complete with a distinctive keyhole cutout that adds a touch of modern flair. Even the backdrop, a light pink dotted background, helps her pop! Developing an OC goes beyond just their appearance, though that's often where I start! I love thinking about their personality traits, their backstory, and what makes them tick. For Jazmyn, I imagine her as confident and stylish, with a subtle strength reflected in her posture – like how she crosses her arms. And when you look at the close-up of her face, you can really see the care I put into her features: her dark, flowing hair, large expressive eyes, and full lips all contribute to her captivating presence. If you're an aspiring artist or just curious about character design, here are a few tips I've learned along the way: 1. Start with a Core Concept: What kind of character do you want to create? What feeling or message should they convey? 2. Visuals First (or Last!): Some artists start with a visual sketch, others with a personality. There's no right or wrong way! For Jazmyn, the image of a strong aesthetic came first. 3. Pay Attention to Details: As with Jazmyn’s keyhole cutout or her specific facial features, small elements can tell a big story about a character. Also, don't forget subtle touches like the white heart outlines I included in the full-body drawing. 4. Give Them a Story: Even if it’s just a rough idea, a backstory helps solidify their personality and motivations. 5.
