My Great Ocean Road drive was an absolute dream, and I want to share even more about how to make your trip just as incredible! While the original post touched on the magic, I wanted to dive deeper into the practicalities and hidden gems we discovered while driving this iconic route. First off, planning is key for a truly memorable Great Ocean Road drive. Many people try to do it in a single day, but trust me, you’ll want at least two, preferably three, to truly savor every moment. We started our adventure from Melbourne, heading west, which puts the ocean on your left, offering continuous stunning views. Spring (September-November) and Autumn (March-May) are fantastic times to visit; the weather is milder, and the crowds are a bit thinner. Don't forget layers of clothing – the coastal weather can be unpredictable! Beyond the majestic Twelve Apostles, which are undeniably a highlight, there are so many other stops that made our Great Ocean Road drive unforgettable. After leaving the surf capital of Torquay, we pulled over at Bells Beach, soaking in the legendary surf vibes. Lorne and Apollo Bay became our charming pitstops for delicious local food and stretching our legs. A real personal favorite was the stop at Kennett River – keep your eyes peeled for koalas snoozing in the eucalyptus trees right by the road! It’s such a unique wildlife encounter that really adds to the adventure. Further along, the lush, ancient rainforests of Otway National Park offer a refreshing change of scenery. We took a detour to the Cape Otway Lightstation, which provided incredible panoramic views – definitely worth the small entry fee. And near the Twelve Apostles, don't rush off! Spend time exploring Loch Ard Gorge, a place steeped in history and natural beauty, and brave the Gibson Steps to see the massive rock stacks from the beach level. The Grotto and London Arch are also easily accessible and provide equally stunning photo opportunities. When actually driving the Great Ocean Road, take your time. This isn't a race! There are countless designated pull-off points where you can safely stop, take photos, and just breathe in the fresh ocean air. Be mindful of the winding roads and the occasional wildlife – we saw wallabies and even an echidna near the roadside! Make sure your fuel tank is full, especially before leaving the larger towns, as petrol stations can be sparse in between. We pre-booked our accommodation in Apollo Bay and Port Campbell, which took a lot of stress out of the journey. Driving on the left side of the road might be new for some, so stay alert and enjoy the journey rather than focusing solely on the destination. This drive truly is about the journey itself, revealing new wonders around every bend. It's an experience I'd recommend to anyone looking for an epic Australian road trip!
