Desde el cielo la montaƱa de Cristo rey Guanajuato
My trip to the magnificent Cristo Rey statue in Mexico was truly a highlight of my Guanajuato vacation! If you're planning a visit to this incredible region, you absolutely must add this iconic landmark to your itinerary. Perched atop the Cerro del Cubilete mountain, the views are simply breathtaking, making the journey up entirely worth it. I remember feeling a sense of awe as we approached the base of the mountain and saw the impressive Jesus statue gazing out over the landscape. Getting there was part of the adventure! From Guanajuato city, I took a local bus to Silao, which was quite straightforward and affordable. Once in Silao, you'll find plenty of local taxis or "combis" (shared vans) ready to take you up the winding road to the summit. I opted for a combi, and it was a great way to experience local transport and chat with fellow travelers. The drive itself offers increasingly stunning vistas, so have your camera ready! Upon reaching the top, the sheer scale of the Cristo Rey statue is even more apparent. Standing at over 20 meters tall, it's one of the largest Christ statues in the world. I spent a good amount of time just walking around the base, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the panoramic 360-degree views of the sprawling plains and distant mountains. It's truly a spiritual and serene place, with a beautiful modern basilica built right into the mountain. I lit a candle there and took a moment for quiet reflection. For anyone planning their own visit, here are a few tips I picked up: Best Time to Visit: I went in the late morning, which was perfect for clear views and fewer crowds than later in the day. Early morning or late afternoon can offer beautiful light for photos, but check the weather! What to Wear: It can get windy and a bit cooler at the summit, even on a warm day, so I recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater. Comfortable shoes are a must, as there's a fair bit of walking around. Food & Drink: There are small vendors at the top selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. I grabbed a refreshing agua fresca, which was delicious. Photography: The views are incredible, so bring your widest lens for landscapes and don't forget to capture the statue itself from different angles. Overall, my experience at the Cristo Rey statue in Mexico was incredibly enriching. It's more than just a statue; it's a cultural icon and a place of immense beauty and peace. Whether you're looking for stunning photo opportunities, a bit of spiritual contemplation, or just an amazing view during your vacations, this Guanajuato gem should definitely be on your list!
