The Grotto, also known as the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother , is a 62-acre shrine and botanical garden in Portland, Oregon.
📕 Established in 1924 by Servite priest Father Ambrose Mayer, the Grotto was built as a place of peace and spiritual renewal, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
💒 DEDICATION:
A little boy (Father Mayer) prayed to Mary when his mother was near death after giving birth to his sister. He promised to do a great work for the Church if she recovered, which she did. This promise is connected to the inspiration behind the creation of The Grotto.
LOWER LEVEL:
Father Mayer, with support from local donors, carved a cave from a basalt cliff, installing a replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà. The first Mass was celebrated there on May 29, 1924.
🌳 UPPER LEVEL:
The sanctuary expanded in the 1950s with the development of the Upper Level Gardens, accessible by elevator, and offering lush landscapes and serene views.

Today, the Grotto hosts various events, like the “Festival Of Lights ” which is recognized as the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. The event features over 500,000 lights and includes performances by regional choirs, outdoor caroling, and a petting zoo.
