Cirque de Gavarnie is France’s Natural Colosseum

Rome gave us one Colosseum, but France gave us this 🤯

🏔️ I still can’t get over these mountains and how epic this location felt. You feel hugged by these peaks once you reached the trail.

Known as “Nature’s Colosseum,” and still feels like a hidden gem. 90% of travelers visiting France skip this area of the country. You will encounter mostly French or Spanish locals on these trails.

Cirque de Gavarnie is a massive amphitheatre-shaped mountain in the Pyrenees that hides one of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

TWO THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE VISITING👇

1️⃣ Once you cross the little bridge, grab any parking spot you can. We totally missed the do not enter sign and ended up driving along the hiking trail instead 🥴

2️⃣ If you want to actually see the waterfalls, visit between May and September when the snow melts and the flow is at its peak.

📍LOCATION: Cirque de Gavarnie, Hautes-Pyrénées , Occitanie , France

🚗 Access: Drive to the village of Gavarnie (GEDRE exit on D921) — parking near the bridge

🎟️ Free entry to the trail and viewpoints

🥾 Walk time: 1–2 hrs round trip to main viewpoint

🌸 Best season: May–September for waterfalls / December–March for snow views
