Tips for Small Streamers
i started streaming back in 2022, quit, then started back up again in may! i have been around this space for a long while so i have quite a few tips for beginners.
streaming is hard, dont let anyone tell you its not. it’s a privilege to be able to do this, absolutely. but that doesn’t change the fact that it i taxing on your mental & physical health.
1. be yourself
- it’s self explanatory but it is something i have to say. you can try to fit any mold or stereotype you want, it won’t stick for long. be you, be genuine, and the right people will find you and love you!
2. start now
- you will kick yourself in the bum for all the time you wasted. you don’t need perfect equipment, you don’t need the perfect setup, you just need to start. i started streaming using my nintendo switch, a cheap capture card, and a old macbook. it was far from a good setup or equipment, but it worked and i was able to hit “go live”. it wasn’t perfect but it was real and it was fun.
3. enjoy the journey
- this is also another common sense tip but so often than not, we are so focused on numbers and analytics that we forget how far we’ve grown, how much we’ve learned, and everything we have done to get where we are now. everyone starts out at 0, enjoy hitting new milestones and the journey there.
4. take care of you
- streaming is taxing on your mental & physical health. you run into all sorts of people after you hit “go live”. you run into good people and bad, nice and mean. that can really take a toll on you. streaming long hours, in front of a screen, talking to words in a chat box is also taxing after a while. burnout is real! if you need a break, take one. your viewers will understand, just make sure not to ghost them.
5. set boundaries
- you are a creating a community that reflects who you are! it’s better to lose viewers than to create a community that is not genuinely what you want in a community! if something makes you uncomfortable, say so. set your rules and follow them!
