College Dorm Room Essentials

These are things you actually need when you move into college. I am going into my sophomore year & these things are going to be with me until i’m out of college so take my advice🙏🏻

—————————

The Essentials:

💌 Mattress Topper

- the one i showed is the best one ever, trust me.

💌 Power strips, outlets, etc

- you need these so don’t forget them

💌 Rolling cart

- that cart is the best for putting snacks & holding random stuff. i love the hooks on them for my keys and bags!

💌 Closet organization

- that hamper is great & has lasted me the entire year. the shoe you is a must so your shoes aren’t everywhere and that hanger is the best for leggings, tops, and sm more!

💌 Lighting

- the big like is a no no!! get anything that makes your room more comfortable and less straining on your eyes. get a lamp for beside your bed and get a color changing light bulb so you can change the mood of your room whenever you want!

💌 Cooking Supplies

- get a small air fryer, you will want one. the ice maker machine is great because it’s so cheap and schools really only offer ice in the dining hall! you can cook so many things in a rice cooker and it can be so much fun! the kettle is great for hot chocolate, tea, and for whatever you need boiling water for.

💌 Fans

- your room will be so so hot. my school turns the a/c off from like october to the end of april so it’s very hot in my room during those times, like unbearably hot. having a good fan that won’t die on your will be great. a box fan is also great to put up on your window to let air come in. i also recommend a small desk fan for on your nightstand so it’s aimed directly at you & your aren’t that hot in your bed.

❇️ Honorable Mentions

💌 Silk Sheets

- these keep you so cool and not sweaty. i also only use a fitted sheet which i personally like, i don’t like regular sheets under my comforter.

💌 Decor

- neon signs, picture frames, etc. get anything to make your dorm feel like home.

💌 Command Strips

- you need any and all shapes and sizes of these, trust me.

💌 Fridge & Microwave

- if your school doesn’t give you these, get them asap

💌 Nightstand

- get a four cubed organizer thing for your nightstand. had the cubes for organizing things & is the perfect high when you have your bed the highest it goes. it is the one that is time a 4 by 1 if that makes sense.

... Read moreMoving into a college dorm is an exciting milestone, but figuring out what to bring can feel overwhelming. After experiencing dorm life firsthand, I’ve learned that a few key items can truly transform your tiny room into a comfortable and functional living space. It's all about making smart choices to maximize comfort, convenience, and your budget. First up, let's talk about the foundation of a good night's sleep: your bed. Dorm beds are notoriously uncomfortable, so investing in a quality mattress topper is non-negotiable. Look for a memory foam or gel-infused topper that offers good support and cooling properties. It’s a game-changer for getting proper rest after late-night study sessions. Beyond the topper, consider layering your bedding for ultimate coziness. While silk sheets are a luxury, having a soft duvet or a comfortable comforter, along with a couple of extra pillows, can make your bed a true sanctuary. Think about soft, breathable fabrics – like the blue and gray bedding I've seen – that help regulate temperature. Next, optimizing your limited space is crucial. Closet organization is more than just a hanger; it’s a system. Utilize hanging shelves, a shoe rack for all your footwear, and under-bed storage bins to keep clutter at bay. I found that vacuum seal bags are fantastic for storing seasonal clothes, freeing up valuable closet space. A rolling cart isn't just for snacks; it can be a mobile storage unit for toiletries, study supplies, or even a mini coffee bar. And don't underestimate the power of Command Strips! They’re perfect for hanging decor, string lights, or even small organizers without damaging walls. My tip: stock up on various sizes! Creating the right ambiance is essential for making your dorm feel like home. The harsh overhead lighting can be a real downer. Instead, invest in soft, warm light sources. A good table lamp for your desk or bedside, some cozy string lights around your bulletin board, or even LED strip lights can completely change the mood. I personally love a color-changing smart light bulb; it lets you adjust the atmosphere for studying, relaxing, or just chilling with friends. These simple additions can make a huge difference in how comfortable and inviting your room feels. Finally, having a mini kitchen setup can save you a lot of money and make dorm life much more convenient. An air fryer is incredibly versatile for quick meals like chicken nuggets, fries, or even reheating leftovers. A rice cooker isn't just for rice; you can make one-pot pasta, soups, and even oatmeal. An electric kettle is a staple for instant coffee, tea, or ramen, and trust me, an ice maker is a luxury that feels like a necessity, especially when the dining hall is closed. Don’t forget basic plates, utensils, and a sponge for easy cleanup. And because dorms can get stuffy, especially when the AC is off, a reliable fan is a lifesaver. I suggest both a larger tower fan for general air circulation and a smaller personal air circulator fan for targeted cooling at your desk or bed. Some students even bring a small air purifier for better air quality, especially if they have allergies. These items, along with a mini-fridge and microwave, form the backbone of a practical and comfortable dorm experience.

Where do you hide the rice cooker and air fryer during dorm checks?

i personally never use a shoe rack (as a freshman now) but, i also don’t own a lot of shoes so i can just store them in my closet on the floor. the shoes i do have are my tennis shoes, crocs, and some slippers which are literally life savers. but everything else i use literally on a daily!!
