The Reality of Being in a Business Major

i am an accounting and management double major (which fall as a being in the general business major category). here is the reality of it, in my opinion & experience.

if you are unsure of what you want to major in, look into a business major. whether it’s accounting, marketing, finance, economics, etc. companies are always hiring & you can make some good money. but don’t just do it for the money, if you have a genuine interest in anything business, do it!

i choose my majors because i love math and business. & there’s always room for growth in companies with these degrees.

1. textbooks can be very expensive

- to my knowledge, anyone in a business major has to take accounting classes. for my school, we have to take accounting 1, 2, & managerial. accounting textbooks are quite expensive. my accounting 1 book was over $200 to rent it. so keep in mind that these textbooks can be expensive, as for any major in general.

2. covering a wide variety of topics

- each class you take covers different areas of business and majors. you will take accounting classes, marketing, economics, management, administration, and a ton more. taking all these classes can help you decide which area(s) you’re most interested in. if you are an accounting major, for example, you will still be taking all these classes as a general business core but will also take more major classes as you go through your curriculum.

3. understanding & application > memorization

- in business majors, you will be challenged and asked to understand and apply what you learn over memorizing it. in my experience, my professors are wanting us to be able to apply what we learned to many situations over memorizing every detail of what we learned. understanding why you’re doing something or how to apply it to a situation or how you would go about different situations is important.

this is what i’ve always wanted when learning since memorization wasn’t always my strongest skill. understanding why i’m doing what i’m doing & being able to have that explained helped me learn way more than just memorizing stuff on paper.

4. double majors/minoring is great & easy to achieve

- double majoring or adding minors is quite easy. majority of the time, you will be taking those classes anyway so being able to have more than one major or adding a minor can be easy to achieve. to get my management degree, i just need to take all my business classes and accounting classes to graduate with that second major. not every major is like this when you double major or add a minor but if you are able to do it how i am without extra classes, definitely do it.

more than one major or adding a minor brings so much more to the table for you when getting a job or wanting to grow within a company. it’s definitely something to ask your advisor about!

5. you still need to study

- although it is still about understanding and applying, you still need to study for exams and for a deeper understanding. even if some of the classes aren’t very hard while being in a lecture, you still need to study to do well on exams and such. it also helps you add more into conversation in class if you go over the notes or slides before class.

looking over your class material before a lecture helps you be able to ask for a better explanation of things you may not fully understand & will help you follow along better.

6. a lot of versatility for future jobs

- coming out of college, a ton of business majors get jobs fairly quickly. & there’s a lot of versatility of what you can do. if you want to be a lawyer & are unsure if you want to 100%, instead of doing political science, major in a business major like accounting or finance. a lot of people who go to law school are business majors. there is also tons of room for growth in companies.

7. connections are a must

- getting connections is very important for any major but very very important for business majors. if you have a professor you really like & they liked you or you did well in the class, ask for a recommendation letter or friend them on linkedin. we aren’t in high school anymore, tons of professors want you to add them on linkedin to see how you’re doing after college or after you left their class.

i had a professor in the spring who was retiring after the semester & was very adamant on us friending her on linkedin to keep up with her. i liked this professor a lot and did very well in her class & she also liked me. adding her on linkedin was great so i can get a future recommendation letter or just check up on how she’s doing.

—————————

all in all, business majors aren’t all easy as the stereotypes make them out to be. it’s still a lot of hard work especially if you are aiming for academic excellence or just to get the most out of the money you’re spending on schooling.

i would 100% recommend majoring in some type of business because its honestly so much fun! the classes are very engaging & fulfilling, especially if you didn’t get that in high school. they can be challenging & enjoyable. it’s also super easy to engage with your professors or advisors, in my opinion, because they want to see you succeed.

business majors aren’t for everyone but if you’re unsure, try it out!
