Horse girls will research feed, supplements, saddle fit, bodywork, recovery and every tiny change in our horse’s behavior like our lives depend on it. Meanwhile we’re heading to the barn tired, under-fueled and wondering why our own body feels like garbage.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot more since getting back into riding. There are two bodies doing the work when I ride, and mine affects theirs. My strength, energy, balance, reaction time and how well I can actually use my body all come with me when I get in the saddle.
So I’m trying to give my own routine the same attention I naturally give theirs - working out, eating enough, sleeping, hydrating and actually giving my body some support instead of expecting it to run on vibes.
Because if I’m heading to the barn after an already-long day, I don’t want to be lagging halfway through my ride when my horse still needs me to be present, strong and focused. I’ll probably always be better at remembering what she needs than what I need, but I’m finally taking care of both athletes.
