... Read moreOh my gosh, you guys, if you're dreaming of an escape that combines breathtaking scenery with an active adventure, you have to consider biking the Florida Keys! When people ask me what stood out the most from my 200-mile journey, my first thought always goes to that incredible turquoise water and the endless lines of swaying palm trees. It’s not just in the photos; it’s even more stunning in person! I remember those moments, riding my bicycle with the warm sun on my skin and the salty air filling my lungs, looking out at the ocean and seeing so many shades of blue and green. It's truly mesmerizing. The water gets that famous 'Caribbean glow' because of how shallow and clear it is, allowing the white coral sand on the seafloor to reflect the sunlight. Every turn brought a new vista of this natural wonder. My helmet was practically glued to my head, not just for safety but because I didn't want to miss a single second of those views! For anyone planning a similar trip, here are a few tips I picked up along the way to truly soak in the beauty of the Keys: First, timing is everything. I went when the weather was just perfect – not too hot, and less humid. Early mornings are magical; you get to see the sunrise paint the sky over the calm turquoise water before the crowds arrive. Plus, it's cooler for biking. Second, embrace the bridges! While biking over the ocean can feel a little exposed, these stretches offer the most uninterrupted views of that glorious water. The old Seven Mile Bridge, now a pedestrian and bike path, is a must-do. You'll literally feel like you're floating on water with palm trees dotting the distant islands. It’s the perfect spot for a selfie against that iconic backdrop. Third, don't just bike past the beaches. Pull off your bicycle and take a break! There are so many hidden gems. I loved finding little public beach access points where I could dip my toes in the ocean and just watch the waves. Sometimes, these spots were lined with private palm trees, offering a little shade and a secluded feel. Pack a small towel and some water – trust me, you'll want to stop and linger. Fourth, hydration and sun protection are key. Even on cooler days, the Florida sun is intense, especially when you're biking over open water. My water bottles were constantly refilled, and I reapplied sunscreen religiously. A good pair of sunglasses is non-negotiable to fully appreciate the clarity of the turquoise water without squinting. Lastly, and this is a big one for really experiencing the local vibe: look for the local spots. Beyond the main tourist attractions, you'll find charming cafes and small shops. I found a lovely spot selling fresh juices that was nestled right under a canopy of gorgeous palm trees. These little moments truly made the 200-mile journey feel less like an endurance challenge and more like a scenic exploration. Biking the Florida Keys isn't just about covering distance; it's an immersive experience where every mile brings new sights, especially that breathtaking turquoise water and the iconic palm trees. It's an adventure I'll cherish forever, and I hope these tips help you plan your own unforgettable trip!
