... Read moreHey everyone! I know how popular 'water photoshoots' are right now, and after doing one recently (it was for a special occasion!), I wanted to share some of my favorite tips and tricks to help you plan your own stunning aquatic session. It's truly a unique way to capture memories, whether it's for a birthday, anniversary, or just because!
First things first, location is key! Think about what kind of vibe you're going for. Are you dreaming of a serene lake, a dynamic beach with crashing waves, a whimsical waterfall, or even a chic swimming pool? Each setting offers a different aesthetic. For our shoot, we found this incredible hidden spot by a river that had just the right amount of dappled sunlight filtering through the trees – pure magic! Don't be afraid to scout locations beforehand. What looks good on a map might not translate into the perfect photo backdrop.
Next up, what to wear? This is crucial for water shoots. Flowy fabrics like chiffon, silk, or light cotton work wonders as they move beautifully with the water, creating that ethereal, dreamy effect. Avoid anything too heavy or stiff that will weigh you down or look awkward when wet. Bright, solid colors often pop beautifully against natural water backdrops, but pastels can also create a soft, romantic feel. I opted for a light, flowing maxi dress, and it was perfect for twirling and getting those gorgeous 'wet fabric' shots.
Posing can be a little tricky in water, but don't fret! The key is to embrace the movement. Try walking through shallow water, splashing gently, or even floating if you're comfortable. Candid moments often turn out the best. Look at your partner, laugh, whisper secrets – let your natural connection shine through. We tried some poses sitting at the water's edge, holding hands, and even some playful splashes. Remember to keep your movements fluid and natural. Sometimes just letting the water create its own patterns around you is enough.
Timing is everything. Golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) provides the most flattering, soft light for outdoor water photoshoots. It minimizes harsh shadows and gives everything a warm, glowing quality. Midday sun can be very harsh and cause squinting, so try to avoid it if possible. We scheduled our shoot for late afternoon, and the light was just incredible!
Finally, don't forget safety and comfort! Water can be unpredictable. Make sure you're shooting in a safe area, especially if you're not a strong swimmer. Bring towels, a change of clothes, and maybe even a warm drink if the water is chilly. Have fun, relax, and let your personality shine through. A water photoshoot is an adventure, and the memories you create will be just as precious as the photos themselves!
