Ok ok last one, I promise (until book five comes out 😛). My creative writing students (all Gen Z) helped me with this one, and we cracked up.

As a fan of YA fantasy myself, I found 'The Book of Water' to be a thrilling mix of classic and new elements. The story cleverly mixes the enchanting underwater world of merfolk with the intense themes of revenge and political intrigue reminiscent of The Count of Monte Cristo. What really drew me in was how the author uses necromancy and shadow magic to build a dark and mysterious atmosphere that feels fresh and original. The dynamics between the two heirs from enemy kingdoms—one a merfolk with powerful aquatic abilities, and the other a human—adds layers of tension and complexity. Their evolving relationship, sparked initially by an arranged marriage, naturally brings out themes of trust, betrayal, and unexpected feelings. This kind of character development, paired with a gripping plot involving a mermaid baddie and the quest for revenge against a shared human enemy, made the story emotionally engaging and suspenseful. I also appreciated the creative involvement of Gen Z perspectives in the writing process, which brought authentic and relatable dialogue and humor to the narrative. The combination of traditional fairy tale inspiration with modern storytelling and supernatural magic struck a perfect balance for readers like me looking for something both timeless and new. If you enjoy fantasy filled with secrets, betrayal, and magical intrigue, plus a touch of romance and revenge, this book series is definitely worth following. I’m eagerly waiting for book five to come out because the world and characters are so richly developed. For anyone who loved the blend of classic tales with darker, magical twists, 'The Book of Water' delivers an exciting and unique reading experience.
