We rescued him from an abusive and neglectful situation when he was around 10 weeks old! He’s 2 years old now and is glued to my hip! Literally!! River LOVES to give hugs and for me to carry him around the house like a baby on my hip!
✨Sasha-
She was my husbands dog prior to us meeting! She is a Siberian husky so you guessed it- she LOVES to talk! She is the sassiest girl and takes nap time very seriously! Although she’s older, her and River play together 24/7 as if they are both little pups!
🐾 we love them so much and will forever be our first babies!!

... Read moreIt's truly amazing how much joy our fur-babies bring into our lives, isn't it? After sharing a bit about River and Sasha, I wanted to dive a little deeper into what makes these breeds so special, and perhaps share some tips that have helped me along the way, especially for fellow dog moms out there navigating the wonderful world of pet ownership!
Let's talk about those sassy Siberian Huskies like Sasha. If you're thinking about adding a Husky to your family, get ready for a lot of personality! Their 'talking' isn't just barking; it's a whole range of howls, yips, and groans that are incredibly expressive and sometimes hilarious. They're highly intelligent but can also be quite independent and stubborn, which means consistent, positive reinforcement training is absolutely key. Don't be surprised if they test your boundaries – a strong, patient leader is what they need. Huskies also have an incredible amount of energy, so daily strenuous exercise is a must – think long walks, runs, hiking, or even dog sports. A tired Husky is a happy Husky! And be prepared for the shedding! Their beautiful double coat is designed for cold weather, but it means regular grooming is essential, especially during their twice-yearly 'blowing coat' seasons, to keep them comfortable and your home manageable. Secure fencing is also non-negotiable; these clever dogs are known escape artists!
Then there's River, my sweet Lab mix rescue. Lab mixes often inherit the wonderful friendly, gentle, and loyal traits of Labrador Retrievers, but with a unique blend from their other parent, making each one a delightful surprise. With rescues, building trust is paramount. River, being glued to my hip, shows how strong their bond can become once they feel safe and loved in their forever home. For rescue dogs, patience is your best friend. They might come with past experiences that require understanding and gentle guidance, so creating a predictable, loving environment helps them thrive. Positive reinforcement works wonders, especially for dogs like River who crave connection and praise. Regular exercise is also crucial for Lab mixes, as they tend to be energetic and playful, just like River and Sasha playing 24/7! Enrichment toys and puzzles can also keep their intelligent minds busy, preventing boredom.
Introducing dogs in a multi-pet household, even if one was there first like Sasha, can take time and requires careful consideration. Supervised introductions in neutral spaces, allowing them to set their own pace, and ensuring each dog has their own separate space for eating and resting can prevent conflicts and foster a positive relationship. Seeing River and Sasha play together like pups, even with Sasha being older, is a testament to how well they've bonded over time. It warms my heart to see them chase each other around the yard!
Ultimately, whether you have a sassy Siberian Husky, a loving Lab mix, or any other wonderful breed, the most important 'trick' is unconditional love, commitment, and understanding their individual needs. Every dog is an individual, but understanding general breed traits and being prepared for their unique quirks can certainly help you anticipate their needs and build an even stronger, happier relationship. What unique traits do your fur-babies have? I'd love to hear about them and what tips you've found helpful!
