Normal Signs That You’re Getting Your Period

Your body loves to communicate with you! It may give you signs that your period is coming right before it arrives.

For me, I always get breast tenderness, acne and super bloated. Sometimes I'll get headaches and fatigue as well. The headaches and fatigue persist into my period! Honestly, I probably get more symptoms that I don't even realize.

You also may have diarrhea, break out and get acne, have trouble sleeping even though you're tired, get cramps, have mood swings, pain in your lower back, and even maybe anxiety and depression. Although it is not fun to experience these things, your hormones are changing and it is nice of your body to tell you that your period is coming.

Being in tune with your body can help improve your relationship with yourself. It allows you to give your body what it needs in order to keep you thriving and feeling your best!

But by tuning in and recognizing the patterns, I've started noticing a range of subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle!) changes that act like my body's personal alarm clock. It's actually been quite empowering to know what to anticipate! One of the earliest and most noticeable signs for me is often a distinct breast tenderness or soreness. My breasts just feel a bit heavier and more sensitive to touch, making even wearing a regular bra uncomfortable. It's usually a clear cue that my hormones are shifting, signaling the approach of my cycle. Then there's the inevitable acne breakouts. Just when I think my skin is finally clear, a few days before my period, those pesky hormonal spots start popping up, especially around my chin and jawline. It's frustrating, but knowing it's linked to my cycle helps me prepare and adjust my skincare routine with targeted treatments. Oh, the bloating! I swear I can gain a few pounds of water weight overnight. My stomach feels distended, and my clothes feel tighter than usual. I've found that drinking plenty of water and cutting down on salty foods can sometimes help ease this discomfort for me. Mood swings and emotional shifts are also a big one for many of us. One minute I'm fine, the next I could burst into tears over something tiny, or feel incredibly irritable. Sometimes I even experience a wave of anxiety or just feel generally down and a bit depressed. It's a powerful reminder that my hormones are playing a significant role, and it's okay to give myself extra grace and space during these times. The pre-period slump is real! I often find myself battling a dull headache and just feeling utterly drained with persistent fatigue, even after a good night's sleep. It's my body telling me to slow down and listen to its need for rest, cutting back on strenuous activities if possible. While cramps are often associated with the actual period, sometimes I get a dull ache or mild cramping in my lower abdomen or lower back pain a day or two before. It's a gentle warning that things are about to kick off, and I might want to have some pain relief, a hot water bottle, or a warm bath ready to soothe these early sensations. Digestive changes are another common, though often overlooked, sign. My digestion definitely changes; sometimes it's a bit of diarrhea, other times I feel constipated. It's all part of the hormonal rollercoaster affecting different systems in the body. Pairing this with sleep disturbances, where even though I feel tired, falling or staying asleep becomes harder, really adds to the pre-period challenge. Recognizing these 'normal signs' isn't about dreading your period; it's about empowerment. It allows you to anticipate, prepare, and treat your body with the kindness it deserves. Whether it's scheduling some down time, adjusting your diet, ensuring you have your menstrual products ready, or just being extra patient with yourself and your loved ones, knowing what's coming can make the whole experience feel a lot less overwhelming. Listen to your body – it truly knows best!
