Coffee Hack For Weight Loss!

Something I've been doing for over a year now that I love that has helped me lose and maintain weight is protein coffee!

I add a scoop of high quality protein powder to a cup of black coffee. It flavors it, replaces the cream I would have otherwise used, and starts my day with over 20 grams of protein.

Starting your day with protein gets you ahead on your amount of protein consumed in a day. Adequate protein consumption helps you stay fuller longer, reduces cravings, helps you eat in a calorie deficit, and helps build muscle which all contribute to fat loss! Such a fun way to start your day and work at your weight loss goals.

... Read moreWhen I first started my journey with protein coffee, one of the biggest questions I had was, "what is a good protein powder to add to coffee?" It felt like there were endless options, and I wanted something that would taste great, mix well, and truly support my weight loss goals, not just add extra calories. Through a lot of trial and error, I've learned a few things that I’m excited to share with you! First off, the type of protein powder makes a huge difference. I’ve found that whey protein isolate often works best for coffee because it tends to be very fine and mixes smoothly, reducing the chances of those dreaded clumps. It's also usually lower in lactose, which is a bonus for some. Casein protein can be thicker and sometimes lead to a less smooth texture, but it’s great for sustained release. If you're plant-based, pea protein or a blend of rice and hemp protein can be fantastic options. The key is to choose a brand known for its good mixability. Next, let’s talk about flavor! This is where you can really choose a flavor that makes sense for your taste. An unflavored protein powder is versatile because you can add your own spices like cinnamon or a tiny bit of vanilla extract without clashing. However, I’m a big fan of flavored protein powders. Vanilla and chocolate are classic, but I’ve also experimented with seasonal flavors. Seriously, a pumpkin spice latte (PSL is soooo good, right?) flavored protein powder can make your morning coffee feel like a treat, helping you stay on track without feeling deprived. Just make sure the flavor complements coffee, not overwhelms it. Now, for the mixing hack! To avoid clumping, I always add my scoop of protein powder to a small amount of cold coffee or water first, creating a paste. Then, I gradually pour in the hot coffee while stirring vigorously with a spoon or a small whisk/frother. This method ensures a super smooth, creamy protein coffee every time. Some people even prefer to blend it all quickly in a blender for an extra frothy texture. Finally, for those who’ve heard of "bulletproof coffee with protein powder" and are curious, it’s a slightly different twist. Traditional bulletproof coffee typically involves blending coffee with grass-fed butter and MCT oil for a high-fat, energy-boosting drink often associated with ketogenic diets. When I add protein powder, I'm usually focusing more on the protein boost for satiety and muscle support rather than the high-fat content. However, you absolutely can combine them! If you want a protein-packed, high-fat morning drink, blend your coffee with a scoop of protein, a tablespoon of butter, and a teaspoon of MCT oil. It's a powerhouse, but remember it will be higher in calories, so it's about aligning with your personal goals. Experiment to see what works best for you and your weight loss journey!
