My Letterboxd Top 4

These are my 4 favorite films of all time, and it would be really hard for me to ever replace them with something else. What are your top 4 films? Have you seen any of these? EXHUMA was a recent watch last year, which ended up kicking out “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (I will accept no criticism on this movie).

... Read moreThe selected top 4 films — The Wailing, Exhuma, Donnie Darko, and Hellraiser — represent a diverse range of horror subgenres and cinematic styles that have made a significant impact on fans and critics alike. Hellraiser (1987), directed by Clive Barker and based on his own novella "The Hellbound Heart," remains a cornerstone of supernatural horror cinema. Its introduction of the Cenobites and the iconic character Pinhead brought a new level of dark, visceral storytelling. The film expertly explores themes of pain and pleasure, and it continues to influence horror narratives decades later. The Wailing (2016), a South Korean horror masterpiece by Na Hong-jin, stands out for its compelling integration of religious and supernatural elements within a gripping mystery. The film's long runtime is justified by its deep storytelling and atmospheric tension, diving into themes of faith, evil, and human desperation as the protagonist attempts to save his daughter from an inexplicable sickness. Donnie Darko (2001), directed by Richard Kelly, challenges traditional horror definitions by delivering a psychological thriller that blends supernatural visions with existential themes. The film’s unique narrative structure, surreal imagery, and enigmatic plot center around a troubled teenager manipulated by a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume. Its cult status is a testament to its complex storytelling and emotional depth. Exhuma (2024), directed by Jang Jae-hyun, brings contemporary horror with its eerie story of paranormal experts uncovering a supernatural affliction tied to a wealthy family’s ancestral gravesite. The film is noted for its gruesome and atmospheric storytelling, contributing fresh tension and thematic depth to the horror genre. Together, these films showcase horror’s capacity to explore human fears, ethics, and cultural taboos through varied and innovative storytelling approaches. Each film’s lasting appeal lies in its ability to evoke strong emotional responses and reflection, making them essential watches for any horror enthusiast. Whether it’s the psychological dread of Donnie Darko or the supernatural terror of Hellraiser and Exhuma, these films exemplify why horror remains a vital and evolving film genre.
