Anyone else hate chalk?🫣
It’s cute in theory but the minute it touches my hands my soul leaves my body. My skin HATES the sensory feeling of it.
As a mom who frequently visits the park with my little one, I’ve come to realize that not everything about outdoor play is enjoyable, especially when it comes to chalk. While chalk drawing is often seen as a fun and creative activity for toddlers, the texture and residue it leaves can be surprisingly irritating for some of us. The gritty powder clings to skin and clothes, and for those with sensitive skin like me, it can feel almost unbearable. From my experience, the discomfort chalk causes isn’t just a minor annoyance; it affects how I enjoy park outings. I’ve noticed that after a short time playing with chalk, I feel the urge to wash my hands immediately, which sometimes cuts our playtime short. It’s also a sensory challenge—what should be a joyful experience becomes a bit stressful, especially when my child is eager to continue. Despite this, I’ve found ways to make park adventures enjoyable while minimizing chalk exposure. Bringing along wet wipes and a small towel helps manage the mess quickly. Encouraging my toddler to try other park activities, like swings, slides, or sandbox play, also keeps the experience fresh and fun without the chalk hassle. Interestingly, chalk does have its positives—it promotes creativity, fine motor skills, and outdoor engagement. For parents or caregivers who don’t mind the feel, it’s a wonderful tool to stimulate imagination. But for those who share my sensitivity, recognizing that it’s okay not to love every aspect of popular activities is important. If you’re a fellow mom balancing sensory challenges and outdoor fun, you’re not alone. Sometimes, tweaking our routine and understanding our personal limits helps us enjoy the best of both worlds: quality time in the park and comfort in our own skin. Next time you head out for an afternoon adventure, consider packing alternatives and comfort items to ensure everyone has a great time regardless of chalk-related quirks.
