Never trusting FB Marketplace again
I saw someone on FB Marketplace selling phones are a really good price. (Not iPhones, so I was less careful because I thought scams are all about iPhones) Long story short, we agreed to give $500 in person and $100 e-transfer. I selected the place for trading. It's at a bank, lots of cameras, most importantly I feel safe. I got the phone, went home to set it up, and realized it was a fake/clone phone.
I was confident that the cameras picked up his face and his license plate. I also saw him in person and had his name through the e-transfer. Are these enough information if I bring this case to the police?
When buying phones on Facebook Marketplace, even non-iPhones can be counterfeit, so caution is always necessary. Fake phone scams can involve clones that look very similar to genuine models but have inferior hardware and software that affect performance. To avoid such scams, always request a thorough demonstration of the device’s functions on the spot and verify the IMEI number through official channels before paying. Choosing a safe trading place like a bank with surveillance cameras is a smart move—it can provide visual evidence if a scam occurs. However, even with camera footage capturing the scammer’s face and license plate, it’s important to gather all transaction details, including chats, payment receipts, and any identifying information linked to the e-transfer. In cases like this, police can proceed with the investigation if you provide clear evidence such as the seller’s name from the transaction, video footage, and copies of your communications. Additionally, reporting the scam to Facebook Marketplace helps prevent future fraud and may assist in blocking the scammer’s account. To enhance your safety, consider paying with traceable methods and meeting during daylight in public places. Learning to recognize common signs of fake phones—such as inconsistent branding, unusual software interfaces, or unexpected device behaviors—also helps protect your purchase. Remember, scams can happen to anyone, but awareness and preparation greatly reduce risk. Sharing your story helps others stay vigilant and promotes a safer marketplace community.
