In my experience playing ARK Survival Ascended, building with thatch is something I quickly learned to avoid. While it may seem like an easy and quick material to use at the start, thatch structures are extremely vulnerable. They have the lowest durability compared to wood, stone, and metal, making them an easy target for both environmental hazards and enemy players. One of the biggest problems with thatch is how fast it can be destroyed. For example, during a fire, a thatch building will burn down in mere seconds, leaving you exposed and losing all your progress. Similarly, wild dinos and raiders can tear through thatch with minimal effort. This means you're constantly having to repair or rebuild, which can be time-consuming and frustrating. From a strategic perspective, I’ve found that investing a bit more time into gathering materials for wood or stone structures pays off significantly. These materials offer better defense and longevity. Not only does this protect your items and survivors better, but it also allows you to focus more on exploring, taming, and engaging in battles rather than rebuilding your base. If you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to use thatch because it’s cheap and fast, but the long-term disadvantages outweigh the short-term benefits. My advice: Use thatch only for temporary shelters or decorative elements, and upgrade your core base materials as early as possible. Additionally, consider defenses like plant turrets or walls made from stronger materials to further safeguard your home. These tips have greatly improved my ARK gameplay and I hope they help others avoid the pitfalls of using thatch.
