Have you ever come across the word 'mortem' and wondered exactly what it signifies? As someone deeply fascinated by symbolism and the representation of life's ultimate transition, I often incorporate these themes into my creative projects. 'Mortem' itself is a Latin word meaning 'death.' It's a powerful term that often appears in phrases like 'post-mortem,' referring to an examination after death, or 'rigor mortis,' the stiffening of a body. But beyond its literal definition, 'mortem' carries a profound weight, symbolizing endings, transitions, and the cycle of decay and renewal. When I conceptualized this particular raven-themed OC, I wanted to capture the essence of 'mortem' not just as an end, but as a mysterious and majestic force. The raven, for instance, is a creature steeped in folklore and mythology across many cultures, often associated with death, transformation, and even prophecy. It's not just a harbinger of doom, but also a guide between worlds. That's why I chose a prominent beak mask and incorporated flowing feathers into the costume – to evoke that ancient, almost divine connection to the underworld. The choice of skull-like face paint and the glowing blue eyes were crucial for conveying both the macabre beauty and the ethereal nature of my character. The skull is an undeniable symbol of mortality, a reminder of our finite existence, yet when combined with the striking blue lighting, it transforms into something otherworldly and captivating. The intricate ribcage body paint design on the chest further emphasizes this duality – the fragile vessel of life, now exposed and illuminated, hinting at the structure that remains even after life has departed. Through this artistic interpretation, I aimed to explore the 'mortem meaning' not as something to fear, but as an integral, powerful, and even beautiful part of existence. Creating this version, with its detailed elements like the glowing blue ribcage and the stark contrast of the black feathers against the blue glow, was an incredibly rewarding experience. It allowed me to bring a vision of death as a regal, watchful entity to life, inviting viewers to ponder its deeper implications. It’s about embracing the shadows and finding beauty in the inevitable.
