WHY ARE WE STRANGLING THE YARN?! 😂

5 days agoEdited to

... Read moreStarting to learn crochet can be a hilarious yet frustrating experience, especially when it comes to handling yarn properly. Many beginners, myself included, find themselves accidentally strangling the yarn, making the process more difficult than it needs to be. This usually happens because we’re still getting used to controlling the tension and guiding the yarn through each stitch. One key thing I learned to overcome this was adjusting my grip and finding a comfortable way to hold the yarn that works for my hands—everyone’s different! Some people wrap the yarn around their fingers in various ways to maintain even tension, which can feel awkward at first but eventually makes the stitching much smoother. Another helpful tip is to frequently untwist the yarn and avoid pulling it too tight. Strangling the yarn not only wastes energy but can also damage the fibers, leading to uneven or rough stitches. I found that taking a moment to relax my hands and slow down helped me regain control and enjoy crochet more. If you’re new to crochet, don’t worry—this yarn abuse phase is pretty common, and you’re definitely not alone! Engaging with communities like #BeginnerCrochet and #CrochetTips or even watching tutorials can provide useful strategies and moral support. Over time, your yarn tension will become second nature, and strangling your yarn will be a thing of the past. Remember, the journey to crochet mastery is filled with trial, error, and plenty of laughs. Embrace the learning curve, and soon you’ll be creating beautiful, even stitches without a hint of yarn abuse!

Do Yarn Types Really Matter in Crochet?
Not all yarn is the same. (Which is why I love it so much!) Acrylic, cotton, wool blends and bamboo all behave differently when you crochet and how you care for your crochet afterwards. There’s no “best” yarn — just the right yarn for the project. 💬 Which yarn do you like working with most?

A Guide to Gauge in Crochet
The overall key to gauge and tension is to not fight the way you naturally crochet, but to adapt by changing your crochet hook. There will be a point when you can control a lot more but no matter what everyone’s gauge and tension is different, can change, and is unique. To the Beginners: Don’
