Twelfth Knight Book Review <3

My rating - 4.5/5 stars

Review -

This was such a cute contemporary romance and a great modern take on the Shakespearean place Twelfth Night.

The book centers around our two main characters, Vi and Jack. Vi is a passionate, fiery feminist stuck in the trenches of the male-dominate fandom world and Jack is a star football player whose plans get held up after a severe knee injury. They meet through a video game called Twelfth Knight, where Vi plays as her male alter ego, Cesario.

This book offers great and realistic depiction of the misogyny and sexism in many nerd spaces while also touching on the struggle of recovering from serious injury and the healing process. The banter is this story is top notch and the relationship is veryyyy slow burn, so if you're a fan of enemies to lovers and slow burn, I 100% recommend.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard a bit about 'Twelfth Knight' and my 4.5-star rating, but let's dive a little deeper into why this book totally captivated me and what makes it such a standout contemporary romance! First off, if you're like me and love a good Shakespearean retelling that doesn't feel forced, Alexene Farol Follmuth absolutely nailed it. This isn't just a basic rehash; it cleverly weaves the themes and character dynamics of 'Twelfth Night' into a modern setting, making it fresh and relevant. The core idea of mistaken identity and complex relationships is there, but it's updated with such smart, contemporary twists. You might even recognize elements of the original play in Vi's alter ego, Cesario – it's brilliant! Let's talk about our main characters, Vi and Jack. Vi is a force to be reckoned with. I totally resonated with her struggles navigating the often-toxic, male-dominated world of online gaming. Her passion for her craft, combined with her fierce feminism, makes her such a compelling protagonist. It's a really realistic portrayal of the misogyny many women face in these spaces, and I appreciated how the book didn't shy away from that. Her online persona, Cesario, is a fantastic way to explore identity and gender roles, mirroring the original play's themes beautifully. Then there's Jack, the star football player whose world is turned upside down by a severe knee injury. His journey of recovery isn't just physical; it's emotional and existential. He's grappling with losing his identity as an athlete and finding a new path. Seeing him navigate this vulnerability while connecting with Cesario (Vi) in the video game 'Twelfth Knight' adds so many layers to his character. The cover, featuring a man with crutches, truly captures this significant aspect of his story. The chemistry between Vi and Jack (both online as Cesario and Jack, and offline) is *chef's kiss*. This is where the slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers trope shines. Their banter is sharp, witty, and so much fun to read. You can feel the tension build with every interaction, and it makes their eventual connection feel earned and incredibly satisfying. If you adore that push-and-pull dynamic, you are in for a treat. What truly elevates 'Twelfth Knight' beyond a typical romance is its thoughtful exploration of deeper themes. Beyond the romance, it touches on identity, gender, the challenges of online communities, and the resilience needed to overcome personal setbacks. The way it handles these serious topics within a light, engaging romance is truly impressive. It's the kind of book that makes you think while also giving you all the warm, fuzzy feelings. Oh, and a little bonus point for credibility: did you know 'Twelfth Knight' was a Reese's Book Club pick? That's always a good sign for a book that delivers on both entertainment and meaningful content. If you're looking for a heartwarming, thought-provoking, and incredibly charming contemporary romance with a fantastic modern Shakespearean twist, definitely add Alexene Farol Follmuth's 'Twelfth Knight' to your TBR pile. You won't regret it!
