Dusk, Downpour, and Danger

Dusk, Downpour, and Danger: A Motorcyclist’s Fight for Safety on a Slick Mountain Road#MotorcycleSafety #RainyRideTips #MountainRoadHazards #DuskRidingPrecautions #BikerSafetyFirst #SlickAsphaltSurvival #AvoidTruckCollisions #RiderProtectionGear #GravelRoadSafety #NightRideReadiness When navigating rain-slicked mountain roads at dusk—especially with large trucks nearby—prioritize these rules to avoid accidents:

Inspect Your Motorcycle’s Traction Systems Before Departure

Check tire tread depth (ensure it meets legal standards, as worn tires lose grip on wet asphalt) and tire pressure (lower pressure slightly in rain to increase contact with the road, but avoid over-deflation). Also, test brakes: wet conditions can reduce stopping power, so confirm brake pads are in good condition and brake fluid levels are adequate.

Wear Full, Water-Resistant Protective Gear

A waterproof helmet with a anti-fog visor (to combat dusk rain glare), a reinforced jacket/pants, gloves with grip-enhancing material, and steel-toe boots are non-negotiable. Wet gear can weigh you down and reduce mobility—opt for breathable, water-repellent fabrics to stay dry and focused.

Adjust Speed to Match Visibility and Road Conditions

Dusk reduces visibility, and rain-slicked asphalt (plus loose gravel) doubles stopping distance. Slow to 30-40% below the posted speed limit—for example, if the limit is 60 mph, drop to 36-42 mph. This gives you time to react to unexpected swerves (like the large truck in the scenario) or gravel patches.

Maintain a Safe Following Distance (and Increase It in Rain)

Normally, a 2-second gap from the vehicle ahead is recommended—but in rain, expand this to 4-5 seconds. For large trucks, add an extra second: their size can block your view of road hazards, and their tires can kick up spray that blinds you. If a truck swerves close, slow down gradually (don’t brake hard) to create more space.

Stay in the "Visible Zone"—Avoid Truck Blind Spots

Large trucks have massive blind spots: directly behind them, beside their rear wheels, and 10-15 feet in front of their cab. If you can’t see the truck driver’s face in their side mirror, they can’t see you. Ride slightly to the left or right of the truck’s rear (not directly beside it) to stay visible, especially at dusk when light is low.

Use Headlights and Signals Early (and Keep Them Clean)

Turn on your motorcycle’s high beams (if no oncoming traffic) or low beams (if traffic is present) at dusk—even if it’s not fully dark. Clean your headlight lens before riding: rain and dirt can dim light output, making it harder for trucks (and other vehicles) to spot you. Signal turns or lane changes 3-5 seconds in advance to give the truck driver time to adjust.

Avoid Sudden Maneuvers—Brake and Turn Gradually

Wet asphalt and gravel are slippery, so sudden braking or sharp turns can cause your tires to skid. If you need to stop, apply both front and rear brakes gently (70% front, 30% rear) and in a straight line. When turning, lean slowly and keep your body centered—avoid over-leaning, which increases the risk of losing traction.

Scan the Road Ahead for Hazards (Gravel, Potholes, Oil)

Loose gravel (common on mountain roads) is even more dangerous in rain—it can cause your tires to slide without warning. Scan 100-200 feet ahead of you to spot gravel patches, potholes, or oil slicks (oil rises to the surface of wet roads, especially in the first 10 minutes of rain). If you see a hazard, slow down early and ride around it (if safe to do so).

Stay Alert to Weather Changes and Dusk Glare

Mountain weather can shift quickly—rain may intensify, or fog may roll in at dusk. Check the weather forecast before riding, and carry a portable weather radio if possible. Dusk also brings glare from oncoming headlights reflecting off rain—keep your visor clean, and tilt your head slightly to reduce glare. If glare is severe, pull over briefly until visibility improves.

Know When to Pull Over—Don’t Risk It

If rain becomes torrential, visibility drops to less than 50 feet, or the truck’s swerving makes you feel unsafe, pull over to a designated rest area (not the side of the road, where you’re at risk of being hit). Wait until the rain eases or dusk passes—your safety is more important than reaching your destination on time.

... Read moreRiding a motorcycle through rain-slicked mountain roads at dusk is a challenge that requires constant vigilance and preparation. Beyond the fundamental safety tips already discussed, it's important to also consider the impact of fatigue and mental alertness on your riding performance. Dusk often coincides with the body's natural dip in alertness, so ensuring that you are well-rested before setting out can prevent slower reaction times that increase accident risks. Additionally, the use of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) on motorcycles significantly enhances control in slippery conditions by preventing wheel lockup during braking. If your bike has ABS, familiarize yourself with its function and maintenance to maximize safety in downpour scenarios. Wind can also play a major role when riding near large trucks on exposed mountain roads. Sudden gusts or turbulence caused by passing trucks can destabilize your motorcycle, especially on wet surfaces. Therefore, anticipate such disturbances by maintaining a firm grip and steady posture. Regularly cleaning the visor and visor’s anti-fog treatment before the ride helps combat dusk glare combined with raindrops, ensuring your vision remains clear. For even better visibility, consider helmets with photochromic or polarized visors designed to adapt light levels automatically. Community safety also means being predictable to other drivers. Combine your early signal usage with smooth, deliberate lane changes and avoid aggressive riding behaviors. This is particularly important when surrounding large vehicles whose drivers may have difficulty seeing motorcycles due to blind spots. Lastly, consider carrying an emergency kit which includes a compact first aid pack, high-visibility rain poncho, and a mobile phone with a weather alert app. If conditions worsen suddenly, a quick pull-over to safety can be life-saving rather than risking continued riding in treacherous weather. By embracing these comprehensive safety measures, motorcyclists can confidently tackle the hazards of dusk, downpour, and dangerous mountain roads, ensuring their journeys are as safe as they are enjoyable.

This fantasy series fits in the palm of my hand 🤯
I haven’t talked about it before, but Throne of Glass is my favorite fantasy series of all time (I know… that’s a bold claim! I’ve read so many great contenders but there is nothing like this series 😭). I originally read the whole series on my Kindle, and I knew as soon as I finished it that I need
