Fancy Mice!

They're also relatively low-maintenance compared to some other pets, but don't mistake that for no-maintenance! They still need dedication. With patience and gentle handling, many fancy mice become incredibly friendly and enjoy human interaction. I've found that starting handling from a young age and offering treats helps build trust. A solitary mouse tends to be a lonely mouse, and a lonely mouse can be less friendly. My cream-colored mouse, for example, loves to climb on my hand and explore. Now, onto the big one: how to take care of a fancy mouse. This is where the practicality comes in! Housing: A wire cage with small bar spacing or a large glass aquarium (minimum 10 gallons for two, bigger is always better!) is essential. Good ventilation is key. Bedding: I always use a thick layer (at least 6 inches) of dust-free paper-based bedding. This allows them to burrow, which is a natural and essential behavior. Avoid cedar or pine shavings as they can cause respiratory issues. Diet: A high-quality mouse or rat block should be their primary food source. Supplement this with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables (like apple, carrot, broccoli) and occasional seeds (like sunflower seeds as a treat). Always provide fresh water in a sipper bottle. Enrichment: Fancy mice are intelligent and need mental stimulation.
