The Mouse Games - Part 1

If you've got fancy mice or any pet mouse at home, you know they're super curious and active little creatures. Just like us, they thrive on mental and physical stimulation. Simply giving them a wheel isn't always enough, so I've been experimenting with different 'mouse games' to keep them happy and engaged. Why bother with mouse games, you ask? Well, for me, it's all about enriching their lives. Playing games helps prevent boredom, reduces stress, and strengthens our bond. Plus, it's incredibly fun to watch them figure out puzzles or zoom through a tiny obstacle course! It’s like a mini competition for them against themselves, or sometimes, when I have multiple mice, they even seem to compete with each other in a friendly way for treats or the fastest time. So, what kind of 'mouse games' do I play? It's simpler than you might think! Here are a few starter ideas that you can easily set up at home: The Treat Hunt Maze: Mice love to forage! I often create simple mazes using cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, or even small building blocks. I hide tiny, mouse-safe treats (like a small sunflower seed or a bit of oat) at the end or along the path. Watching them sniff out the treat and navigate the maze is adorable and provides great mental exercise. It's their own little treasure hunt! Obstacle Course Challenge: This is where the 'competition' aspect comes in! You can use everyday items to build a mini obstacle course. Think small tunnels made from paper towel rolls, ramps fashioned from cardboard, or tiny jumps over low barriers. My mice absolutely love scurrying through these. I sometimes time them (just for fun!) to see who's the fastest explorer. It's a fantastic way for them to burn off energy. Climbing Adventures: Mice are natural climbers. I often set up safe climbing structures using small branches (ensure they're pet-safe and sterilized), ropes, or even old, clean fabric scraps tied to something sturdy. Always make sure there's a soft landing below in case of a tumble. They get such a thrill from exploring heights! Dig Box Fun: A simple dig box filled with shredded paper, non-toxic soil, or coco coir (make sure it's clean and safe!) with treats buried inside can provide hours of entertainment. It taps into their natural digging and burrowing instincts. Remember, safety is key! Always supervise your mice during playtime, ensure all materials are non-toxic, and keep items clean. Start simple and watch what your mice enjoy most – each little personality is different!
