What Re-entry Taught Me About Christmas
Tonight, as the world settles into the familiar glow of Christmas, I find myself looking at the season through a different lens. After 8 years in prison and 5 on parole, the "magic" of the holydays isn't found in the noise or the consumerism. It’s found in the mechanics of the journey – the transition from the "Great Dark" into the first flickers of a new life. Whether you are navigating the frost of re-entry or simply seeking a more intentional way to live, this is how we walk The MovingStill Path.
1. The Architecture of the Outsider (No Room)
The Christmas story begins with a profound rejection: "No room at the inn." In the ancient world, being "un-roomed" meant you were without status, protection, or a place in the social order. You were effectively invisible.
Re-entry often feels exactly like this. We return to a world that has "no room" for our past or our new ambitions. But there is a Zen Stoic power in this exclusion. The most significant shift in history didn’t happen in the crowded, noisy "inn" of the status quo; it happened in the "stillness" of the stable. The stable represents the ability to build a solid foundation exactly where you are, using whatever humble tools are within your reach. Being an outsider isn't a dead end – it’s a vantage point.
2. The Ancestry of Grace (Mōdraniht)
Before the modern holyday, my ancestors celebrated Mōdraniht (Mothers’ Night), a sacred time for honoring the fierce, quiet, strength of the maternal figures who protected the hearth. This ancient reverence resonates deeply with the story of Mary – a mother who held a "Light" that the world hadn't yet made room for.
In the "Great Dark" of incarceration, when the legal system and society turn their backs, a mother’s love is often the only flame that refuses to go out. Whether it is a biological mother or a maternal figure in the community, that grace is like the Christmas evergreen: it stays vibrant through the bitterest frost. It is the original "Village," opening its gates and providing the warmth and belief necessary to keep a person alive until they can find their way home.
3. Radical Inclusivity: The Widening Circle
The "Village" isn't a single event; it’s an evolving circle that eventually reaches every corner of society. It proves that The MovingStill Path is big enough for everyone, but it starts in the most unlikely places.
* The First Call (The Outcasts): The very first people invited to the stable were shepherds. In that era, they were the "unpapered" – marginalized men living on the outskirts, often mistrusted by the city centers. The light started with them, validating that the "Village" begins with those whom the world has overlooked.
* The Long Journey (The Seekers): Much later, the light reached the Magi – the scholars and influencers from distant lands. They had to travel a long, difficult road to find what the shepherds found in their own backyard.
Whether you are an outcast starting in a stable or someone of influence looking for meaning, we eventually meet at the same fire. We are all participating in the same movement of "Rebirth in the Dark."
4. The Zen of the Empty Manger
A manger is a feeding trough – rugged, made of stone or wood, and built to endure the elements. When it is empty, it represents the Sacred Pause of The MovingStill Path.
During re-entry, your life might feel "empty" because you’ve lost so much. But in Zen philosophy, an empty vessel is the only thing that can truly be filled. That emptiness isn't a lack of value; it is a "Clean Slate" (Tabula Rasa). You don’t need a palace to start over. You just need a solid "manger" – a character hardened by the long winter of your experiences – and the internal decision to fill that space with a new purpose. You just need a humble, empty space for the Light of the World to come and fill.
The Shift
If you are spending this Christmas in the "stable" – feeling excluded, feeling the weight of the past, or struggling with the isolation of the journey – know that the light was born exactly where you are standing. A little unknown Jewish boy was laid in a manger because there wasn't any room elsewhere, and more than two thousand years later we still celebrate the greatness of his life. Be not dismayed, dear traveler, you are on your way.
