At work looking cute
Working in the emergency shelter is a labor of love. Some days it can be sad, frustrating and crazy. I enjoy working with the unhoused and I may as well be cute while doing it.
Working at an emergency shelter is truly a unique and meaningful experience. Each day brings a mix of emotions—from the frustration of systemic challenges to the deep satisfaction of offering support to those in need. One thing I’ve learned is that maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of personal style can make a huge difference not only in how I feel but also in how I connect with the people I serve. Dressing 'cute' or in a way that reflects my personality doesn’t just boost my confidence; it also breaks down barriers and creates a more approachable environment. It reminds me and others that compassion doesn’t have to come at the cost of individuality. When clients see you as both warm and relatable, it fosters trust and opens doors for deeper conversations. Working with the unhoused requires patience, empathy, and resilience. Some days are undeniably tough—you witness hardship that can be heartbreaking and overwhelming. But these moments are balanced by stories of hope, community, and recovery. By embracing both the emotional rollercoaster and the opportunity to express myself through style, I find renewed strength to keep giving my best. Whether it’s a small gesture like a smile or a thoughtful outfit choice, these elements collectively create a more human-centered approach to social work. It’s a reminder that caring for others also means caring for yourself, allowing you to sustain your energy and passion in this demanding field.
