The girl who changed how I see money (and friendsh

I still remember how shocked I was when I first learned about my friend Sandra.

Not because she said anything.

Because nothing about her looked like “rich girl energy.”

Her dresses weren’t luxury. She didn’t have the bad habits people love to stereotype wealthy families with. If anything, Sandra was the opposite — simple, warm, the kind of person who remembers what you said three weeks ago and asks you about it again.

And she cooks.

Not the “I boiled pasta and called it dinner” kind of cooking.

I mean she’ll actually spend her Saturday afternoon making food for me and other friends with her own hands, then smile like she’s the one who got the gift.

So when I found out Sandra’s family was really rich, I felt… weird for a second.

Not because I envied her.

But because I suddenly became hyper-aware of something nobody wants to talk about:

Money changes the air in a friendship if you let it.

I didn’t want our friendship to become that kind of story.

You know the one.

Where one person always pays and the other always “owes” them emotionally.

Where one friend starts feeling guilty for ordering something nicer.

Where someone quietly thinks, “I paid last time,” but says, “It’s fine!” with a smile.

Where the richer friend tries to be generous, and the other friend tries to be “easy,” and somehow both feel uncomfortable.

The worst part is… it doesn’t even take big money to create that tension.

It happens over small stuff.

Coffee. Dessert. Movie tickets. Uber rides.

A birthday dinner where the bill hits the table and everyone suddenly becomes interested in the ceiling.

And that’s the thing I believe in strongly:

True friendship has to be based on equality — not equal income, but equal respect.

Mutual assistance.

A team mindset.

Not scorekeeping.

So I decided early on: I’m not going to let money silently ruin a beautiful friendship.

The moment I realized we needed a “system”

One day, Sandra and I planned a simple hangout.

It turned into one of those “small day that becomes expensive” days.

Brunch. A little shopping. A cab because we were tired. Snacks. Then we ended up buying ingredients because Sandra wanted to cook dinner.

At night, I went home happy… and slightly stressed.

Because in my head, I was calculating:

“Did I pay enough today?”

“Did she pay too much?”

“Should I send her money?”

“But if I send money, will she feel insulted?”

“And if I don’t, will I feel guilty?”

I hated that.

Not because I’m cheap — but because I don’t want love (friendship love counts!) to be mixed with awkwardness.

So I texted her:

“Hey, I feel like we always do mental math. Can we make it simpler?”

Sandra replied immediately:

“Yes PLEASE. I hate thinking about it too.”

That answer made me realize something big:

Even rich people don’t want weird money vibes.

They want things to feel natural, fair, and calm — just like everyone else.

What “fair” actually means in real life

Here’s what fair looks like for us:

Sometimes she pays more — not because she has to, but because she genuinely wants to.

Sometimes I pay — because I want our friendship to feel balanced and strong.

And sometimes we split.

But the key is: we don’t let it become emotional debt.

We don’t “keep track” in our heads.

We don’t do the awkward bill dance.

We don’t pretend it doesn’t matter until it becomes a problem.

We just keep it clear.

Because clarity protects the friendship.

The tool that saved the vibe: AiMoola

We tried doing it the messy way at first — notes app, screenshots, “you paid last time right?” conversations.

It got annoying fast.

So we started using AiMoola for shared expenses.

Not in a dramatic “we’re roommates with a spreadsheet” way.

More like… a quiet little assistant that keeps things fair without making it a big deal.

Now we do things like:

“Brunch 48.”

“Uber 22.”

or we just snap the receipt and move on.

No awkward talk.

No silent guilt.

No mental math at midnight.

Just peace.

And honestly? That peace makes us closer.

Because the friendship stays about what it should be about:

Laughing, supporting each other, showing up — not calculating who owes who.

A small reminder if you’re reading this

If you have a Sandra in your life — someone you love, someone you don’t want to lose — don’t let money become the invisible thing that changes the relationship.

You don’t need to earn the same.

You don’t need to live the same lifestyle.

You just need a system that keeps things respectful.

For us, AiMoola does exactly that.

It doesn’t make friendship transactional.

It keeps it equal.

And that’s the whole point.
