Following up on my initial post about my first oil painting project, I wanted to dive deeper into the magic of underpainting – something I'm learning is absolutely crucial for creating stunning oil pieces. You saw my sepia-toned eggshell studies, right? That initial layer, often in warm brown tones like the ones developing on my easel, isn't just a placeholder; it's the backbone of your entire painting. This process, often starting with a simple charcoal drawing to define forms, truly sets the stage for what's to come. Think of underpainting as laying a strong foundation for a house. Without it, your colors won't sing, and your painting might lack depth and volume. I’m focusing on an old technique where you establish all your values and forms in monochrome first. This helps you concentrate solely on light and shadow, without getting distracted by color. It’s surprisingly challenging but incredibly rewarding for developing those crucial 'artistic characteristics' like form, dimension, and overall mood. There are a few classic 'coloring techniques' for underpainting. What I'm doing, using warm browns and earth tones, is often called 'bistre' or 'brunaille.' Another common one is 'grisaille,' which uses shades of gray, or 'verdaccio,' which uses greenish-gray tones, especially popular for figure painting to create realistic skin tones. Each method has its own charm and influences the final color palette. For my 'abstract shell form,' I’m finding the warm browns are perfect for conveying organic textures and the natural light I envision. One of the 'coloring techniques' that underpainting sets up perfectly is glazing. Once this initial layer is dry (which can take a bit of patience, a key point!), you can apply thin, transparent layers of color over the top. This allows the light to reflect through the glazes, bouncing off the underpainting, creating a luminous effect that’s hard to achieve otherwise. It's like adding stained glass windows to that strong foundation! This is a major 'coloring step' after the underpainting is complete. For my eggshells and the larger shell form seen on my easel, getting the underpainting right is even more critical because I want those subtle shifts in light and shadow to define their unique shapes. A common 'difficulty' I’ve faced is making sure my values are distinct enough without going too dark too soon. If the underpainting is too muted, the subsequent color layers won't have that vibrant pop, and it can be hard to correct later. It’s also a 'key point' to avoid making the underpainting too 'busy' – simplicity is key here to allow the later layers to shine. Another 'key point' is to use lean paint for your underpainting – meaning more solvent, less oil. This ensures it dries quickly and provides a stable surface for fatter (more oily) layers later on. The 'coloring steps' after this initial stage involve gradually building up opaque and transparent layers, always remembering the 'fat over lean' rule to prevent cracking and ensure longevity. This entire 'process, exhibited in the painting seen here, is used often in oil painting as a base layer,' and for good reason! My goal with these eggshells and the larger shell form, as seen developing on my easel, is to truly understand how these monochromatic base layers influence the final artwork. It's not just about copying what I see; it's about interpreting it through this classic, step-by-step process. If you're starting with oil painting, don't skip the underpainting!
