Mercy and grace

You know, for a long time, I used to use 'grace' and 'mercy' almost interchangeably. It felt like they meant the same thing – a kind of divine kindness. But after experiencing a truly vulnerable moment, the kind that makes you question everything, I started to understand that while they're deeply connected, they're distinct and equally powerful in their own ways. Think of it this way, and this is how it finally clicked for me: Mercy is about *not getting what you deserve*. If I've done something wrong, I deserve a consequence, a punishment. Imagine someone giving you a beautiful, undeserved gift, simply out of their abundant love. That’s grace. In my own journey, feeling 'his touch' and experiencing grace felt like being given strength when I had none left, or finding peace in chaos, not because I worked for it, but because it was freely given. It's the unexpected job opportunity, the friend who shows up exactly when you need them most, or the inner peace that settles in your heart amidst turmoil. It's an outpouring of love and goodness when I was empty and certainly hadn't earned it. To put it into an illustration that really helped me, consider a speeding ticket. If a police officer pulls you over and lets you go without a ticket, that's mercy – you deserved the fine, but didn't get it. If that same officer then offered to pay for your gas because you looked stressed, that would be grace – an undeserved favor. Both are acts of kindness, but one withholds deserved punishment, and the other bestows unearned favor. Realizing this distinction made me even more grateful. My story, filled with grace and mercy, isn't just about feeling good, but about understanding a profound truth: we all stumble, we all deserve consequences sometimes, and we all desperately need unmerited love.
